Really wanted to review my 2017 goals – I had a very good biking year.

Increase my commuting, to the point where I am commuting most of the time by bike.

Not sure I beat 50% for the year, but I have been riding 3 or 4 days a week a LOT of the time.

Ride more miles total – 3000 is probably not an ambitious enough goal, but its a nice round number.

Definitely made this one – beat my new 4000 mile goal, and still a couple of weeks to go.

Go faster – try to get my average speed for my commute into work over 13MPH.

Missed this one. I have been riding faster, getting PR’s, but I still don’t think I have broken 13MPH on any one commute. And have not gotten my Eddington Number much above 13.

Ride 100 miles with a bit more time to spare this time.

I did not even do a century in 2017.

Try riding over 25 miles without a rest stop.

yes, have done this at least a couple of times.

Ride in a more challenging organized ride than 13 colonies.

Yup. Great Pumpkin and Cider rides. Oh, and Bobco’s Purple Line ride – that was sort of organized, eh?

Ride the length of the ART.

Done, I love this trail.

Ride the southern half of the GCCCT. Ride the full length of RCP/Beach Road, after it reopens. Ride the C&O from Georgetown to Great Falls.

These remain to be conquered.

Do better in BAFS, especially points. Use CaBi to sleaze like mad.

Did, but it was an easy winter.

Ride CaBi a lot more, get to know it better.

Done, also a bit of dockless at the end of the year.

Learn more about bike maintenance.

Still far from being my own wrench, but I am learning bits and pieces.

Do more advocacy with BPAC.

yes.

Do not have anything stolen.

Thank goodness.

Buy a new bike, a more aggressive one than my Dew.

I have been so happy with the Cannondale, not really a priority.

Get QOTM onto a bike again. Try to do a CaBi around the city day with her.

Oh dear. Oh dear oh dear oh dear.

Edit – Oh, and a big goal, not purely about biking, but mostly – get LDL cholesterol level down enough to get off statins entirely.

Yes and no. Great doc visit, but getting off statins would require an LDL level he does not think is achievable (because of family history, etc)

2018

exceed 2017mileage, whatever it turns out to be
At least match FS performance
Ride GCCCT all the way south to Occuquan
Ride C&O to Great Falls
Ride another century, with more time to spare
Break 13MPH commute
Eddington number to 14MPH.

(I also need an elevation goal, but will reflect on that later)

2018 was my first year on a bike in 25+ years, so I didn’t start out with any stated biking goals or prior year comparisons. I bought an ebike (pedal assist, no throttle) to introduce exercise which I hoped would be fun enough to stick with, to help with some much needed weight-loss and building towards improved fitness, stamina and energy, and perhaps to consider dabbling with office commutes, once I felt “more up to it”. The bike arrived March 2, 2018, and I was 49, 6’2″, 303 pounds.

These loose goals arose while contemplating my 50th approaching in the summer, watching my dad’s weight spike in his retirement, and also having committed to go visit Australian friends in 2020… I won’t lie, the thought of contemplating a 15+ hour flight in an economy seat at 303 pounds was a powerful driver by itself.

So for me, my 2018 results frankly blew me away, and I’ll be evaluating how to form 2019 goals from this, while I recover from the flu this week:

4,032 miles — total biked miles for the year (6,488km)
1,161 miles — car miles eliminated by biking to work
600.2 miles — highest monthly total (Jul.)
109

office roundtrip commutes made
95.8 miles — average weekly miles (of all weeks with any biking)
61 pounds —- weight lost as of 1/1/19
53 pounds —- weight of bike with battery
51.4 miles — longest single-day ride total
38 days

mileage exceeded 30
27.8 miles — highest average daily miles of any month (Sep.)
23 days

greatest number of biking days in any month (Jul.)
22.4 miles — average daily miles (of all days biked more than 1 mile)
17

highest number of office commutes in any month (Oct.)
2 days

mileage exceeded 50
1

number of falls/wipeouts (late in the game at mile 3,961)
0

number of flats (fingers crossed!)

Achieved my regular goal of 400 miles per month, with July being the only month below 500:
J – 684, F – 613, M – 660, A – 701, M – 834, J – 797, J – 487, A – 667, S – 625, O – 711, N – 530, D – 563

I obtained a cyclocross bike and raced in two cyclocross races (DCCX and Capital Cross) and did not finish last in either one.

I am still on track I hope to reach a climbing Eddington number of 1000 by the end of 2020. I am currently at 843 and need 330 more days of 1000 feet or more in the next 726 days.

i set some goals (most at the end of 2017, but i did add some during 2018) for this past year, and i managed to achieve most of them!

Succeeded:

• ride 10k miles
• do a cross race
• do a gravel race
• do a wednesday night spins race
• do the dirty bikeneticrit (technically a road race?)
• learn to trackstand
• top 5 fs individual mileage
• learn cross mount/dismount (needs work)
• average 40 miles per day during fs
• learn to ride no hands
• usurp control of calvinball from tim the enchanter

failed:

• ride everyday (fell off the train on cinco de mayo i believe, didn’t worry about missing days later, and that’s probably a good thing for me mentally)
• learn to bunnyhop
• do a max mileage day (i saw a forum member’s strava ride, and saw it on reddit too, of a 24-hour ride done at hains point, 300+ miles, and wanted to try)
• put 200 miles on my mountain bike (was more like ten miles)
• one century per calendar month (only happened in six months)
• learn cool fixed gear mount/dismount (like swinging your leg over the bars i can do like dcv, but i’m wary of dismounting and throwing the bike in front of me while clipless)

2018 Goals
Seriously, I’m going to bike the entire C&O.
Try bike camping
Do more bike touring
Try to cut back on the mileage
Continue advocating for safe, active living communities
Launch Bike University

Not too bad on the 2018 goals.
Seriously, I’m going to bike the entire C&O. – Didn’t do this, but I biked all of the Natchez Trace Parkway with the best people on earth and it was awesome.
Try bike camping – I did it. Komorebi and I biked up to Harper’s Ferry to go tubing with Steve O and Emm and spent the night at a camp site on the C&O. I thought it was fun and I’d like to do more. We also camped a few nights on the Natchez Trace trip, but that didn’t count since ffxbooks was hauling all of the camping gear.
Do more bike touring – Achievement unlocked. Natchez Trace was great. By far the best vacation I’ve taken in my life.
Try to cut back on the mileage – Success, kind of. I rode 1/3 of the miles from the previous year, which was a pretty dramatic decrease (~12k to ~4k). The bad news was that this was related to a nagging shoulder issue. The good news is that I managed to not be as obsessive about mileage and also that I’ve done a lot of riding around in street clothes.
Continue advocating for safe, active living communities – Super achieved. I joined Alexandria BPAC, attended a few Arlington BAC meetings, attended and supported multiple bike advocacy meetings and formed the Friends of the Mount Vernon Trail.
Launch Bike University – failed, but I’m okay with it.

I typically don’t make NY resolutions, but this year I did, and they are all bike related. In 2019 I am going to:
• Ride 5,000 miles. (I ride ~2,500 stoking a tandem with my husband. Just bought a single bike, All City Space Horse, and am learning to ride that to make up the difference)
• Meet more cyclist and join some group rides. (Doing Alexandria Conte’s Saturday morning ride and love it. Looking for another regular ride, preferable mid-week.)
• Join the Freezing Saddles fun (On the wait-list, so fingers crossed…)
• Increase my cycling confidence and skills. (Working on that, and all of the above will help)
• Learn basic maintenance and repair so I can be a self sufficient cyclist. (Conte’s classes will help there)
• Do a multi-day bike tour somewhere.

2018 Goals:
Quality NOT quantity. I have some very specific training goals this year (yes, I am actually going to train) and need to ride less empty miles and do more structured training. Sorry BAFS team…
DK200 in less than 16 hours.
Mountain bike more.
SM100 in less than 13 hours.
Get more women involved in racing!
Not be DFL in the Cat 3 races.

Well… 2018 was not the best year for me from a goals standpoint. I had some pretty significant health issues that I am still dealing with, so most of my goals landed quite flat between that and the Year of the Mud.

1) I definitely tried harder to do more quality rides than just riding for the heck of it. But all of that strength and endurance that I built up disappeared in July/August due to health problems.
2) DK200 was NOT completed in less than 16 hours. I still have unfinished business out there, but I am taking a year off.
3) HAHAHAHA. Stupid rain.
4) Because of what happened at DK200, I decided to sell my SM100 registration and do a weekend of UCI cross racing instead. That was a good decision.
5) YES! As always, there is still so much work to be done here. But over all, the women’s registration in racing is going up!
6) Hmm… Well, I came in DFL in four cross races this year (out of 14). Two of which were 1/2/3 elite races, one was because of a bad bike decision, and the other was due to a crash and subsequent mechanical.

My goals for 2019:
Get healthy again.
Get strength and endurance back.
Ride my bike for fun and enjoyment.
Have a kick ass cross season.
Be ready to do some serious gravel endurance racing in 2020.

Only made one of my three goals, but I don’t mind.

1) Try a fat bike.

Failed, but just decided to use the mountain bike in the Vermont snow instead. Did not take advantage of the nude swimming opportunities:

2) Do the rest of Skyline Drive.

Failed. Dog had surgery in the summer, then it was the year of the rain that passeth understanding. Maybe this year.

3) Ride 5,000 miles.

7,272 includes 5,000.

My simple 2019 cycling related goals:

Ride every day during Freezing Saddles

Ride 3000 miles

Lose 25 pounds

My simple 2019 cycling related goals were:

Ride every day during Freezing Saddles – completed

Ride 3000 miles – completed 3500

Lose 25 pounds – not even close. I think I actually gained a couple of pounds.

So, for 2020:

Let’s keep the first one and I’m off to a good start.

Lets make #2 3,650 or average 10 miles per day

And for #3, I’ll keep it as is, but add eat fewer snacks and better meals.

Best wishes to you on your goal!

Well, looking back I see I never actually stated any 2019 goals when I recapped my 2018 stats earlier in this thread.
In my head at that time, I’d certainly hoped to break 5,000 miles in 2019, to put me in striking distances of 10,000 by my 2-year bike anniversary in March, 2020…

I was potentially just barely on track to make the 2019 5,000 goal up til October (despite 34 summer days without my bike, during which I didn’t think to try rentals!) but then late Fall brought another 2 weeks lost being too miserable with a flu, and more of an impact on the miles, a new relationship (happily) chewing into my former biking free time.

An unexpected biking detail for 2019 – I “found” (completely forgotten in a storage locker!) and fixed up my original early-90’s Bianchi 21-speed in August, becoming a 2-bike household and clocking about 200 miles on it.
(The ebike I bought in 2018, a throttleless pedal-assist, remains my preferred office commuter bike, while the Bianchi got some weekend time.)

So here is an update comparing the two years for me.

2018 . . . 2019
4032 . . . 3559 — total biked miles for the year
1161 . . . 1080 — car miles eliminated by biking to work
600.2. . . 610.0 — highest monthly total miles (7/18, 6/19)
109. . . . 107 —- office roundtrip commutes made
95.8 . . . 84.5 — average weekly miles (of all weeks with any biking)
-61. . . . +10 —- weight lost as of 12/31/yy
53 . . . . 53

weight (lbs) of bike with battery
51.4 . . . 51.0 — longest single-day ride total miles — Note for 2019 figure, this was my first-ever “Bike Your Age On Your Birthday”! Thanks, CaseyK for nudging me to do it, and riding some of them with me!
38 . . . . 21

days mileage exceeded 30
27.8 . . . 22.8 — highest average daily miles of any month (9/18, 5/19)
23 . . . . 27

greatest number of biking days in any month (7/18, 6/19)
22.4 . . . 20.4 — average daily miles (of all days biked more than 1 mile)
17 . . . . 14

highest number of office commutes in any month (10/18, 10/19)
2. . . . . 1

days mileage exceeded 50
1. . . . . 0

number of days with falls/wipeouts
0. . . . . 0

number of flats (fingers crossed!)

2020 tentative goals:
Bike whole W&OD
Get back to 4,000+ miles/year
Put more miles on the Bianchi

Well… 2019 was a year. How did I stand up to my goals?

1) Ha. :( Things got worse in 2019 and I (and my doctors) are still trying to figure out why. Cheers to answers in 2020!
2) Ha. See #1.
3) YES. I accomplished this! I did ride my bike for fun and enjoyment, a lot!
4) Meh. I had a blast. My Cat 3 performances kind of sucked, but I did enjoy a season of single speed racing and ended up being the Super Series Single Speed Champion. So YAY!
5) I am ready-ish. As ready as my body will allow me to be right now. So I think I might have to temper my goals for 2020.

Work with what I have from a health and fitness standpoint.
Be kind to myself when I am unable to perform how I want.
Pick up some new skills in mountain biking.
Complete a couple multi-day bikepacking races (Trans VA and GRUSK are on the agenda).
Continue to run once a week for cross training.
Ride more with friends.

My goal for 2020 is to enjoy life. You just never know when it will all be over. And it doesn’t matter how old you are.

2019 was my 3rd highest year ever, so I am happy with that. And plus and I saw so many great places across the US.

Let’s just hope for an amazing 2020.

2022 goals.

Exceed my 2021 mileage – should be very doable, as I am up to 360 miles now, and 2021 only rode 1600 miles. My best year was 2019, when I rode over 4400 miles, which will be hard for me to do until I am commuting more regularly.

Make every actual commute to work by bike. I have certainly stuck to that so far.

Get back to more group rides, coffee clubs, and other social stuff. That’s been so helpful in overcoming pandemic isolation, and I need to do more.

Do an overnight bike trip of some kind. At least one.

Get more of the gear that I am missing.

Learn at least a bit more about maintenance.

Some bike advocacy stuff that I won’t go into right now.

In 2021, I finally lost the weight I’d been “trying” to lose for a few years. It was actually fairly easy, just took a more scientific approach of tracking everything I ate. I dropped 70# from 235# to 165# over the course of about five months and held it off all year. I’ve put about 15 back on since I stopped tracking intake, so now I’m focused on settling in at 175 +/- 5 pounds, without specifically tracking my intake.

I rode 7,200 miles last year. This year will probably be a bit less, but anything over 5,000 is fine by me.

I’ve ridden every day of FS22, with only one day (10+ inches of snow) less than 10 miles. My plan is to continue that for the rest of the event.

My true 2022 biking goal is to talk my wife into letting me sell my 2014 Marin Lombard and obtain a Trek Checkpoint in it’s place.

Ride on!
