What’s the whip you’re logging in the most miles for this year’s Freezing Saddles? Show it off and tell us some of the details of your bike.

This is the bike I like to ride most around town. It’s a Matt Chester Mutinyman ti frame and Black Sheep ti fork. When I first got it in ’08 (as a replacement for an ’05 I cracked), it was my main mountain bike. I loved how light, flexy, and fast it felt, but over the years it started to feel undergunned against my newer bikes on the trails I rode, so I started to use it more for road and less for trail.

It’s gone through several iterations of parts setup, most notably the cockpit. On the first version of my Mutinyman (back in ’05), I used a 120mm stem with Jones bars. A few years later, I swapped to 100mm stem, then 80mm, and the latest version I have a 65mm stem and the relatively more upright On-One Mary bars. I (and my back) cannot believe that I used to use a stem that was almost double the length that I use now. My hands also started to hurt with most grips, so I put on Ergons and am really digging them.

Until last night, I was using balloon-y Schwalbe Big Apple 29×2.35″ slicks which made the bike ultra-cush, but slow feeling. I switched them to Specialized Nimbus 700×35 and I picked up a few mph’s :)

It has had short stints as a gearie with a bolt-on derailleur hanger, but I’ve reverted it back to its natural state as a singlespeed with 32×13 gearing. Most of the time I have flat pedals so I don’t have to click-clack on the floor of coffee shops and grocery stores, but if it’ll be a longer ride (>15 miles), I’ll throw on the clipless pedals.

I work from home so I don’t have to worry about locking it up all day outside, but I have taken preventative measures to minimize theft of parts.

    So, what’re you riding?

Currently 161 of the FS players have ridden their regular ol’ bikes in temps below 20 degrees.

20 deg is only insulation class/ defcon 4 in my gear planner. I have insulation classes that run from 1 to 6 with 1 being regular bib shorts and a jersey and 6 being long bibs and legwarmers, 2 sets of shoe covers, winter road boots, balaclava, my magic Gore brand jacket, long sleeve jersey, snowboarding mitts with liner gloves and goggles. Defcon 6=extended sub 10 deg conditions.

If a ride is longer than one hour go the the next defcon level up. Example 20 deg is a 3 short, 4 long. Standard winter bibs, 1 set shoe covers, balaclava, coat, mitts with liner optional.

To be fair, you were not placed on a team because you behave like a dick on the trails.

Judd is in the lead in the rorschach bike test pointless prize. The prize is awarded to the person who concocts the most damning tirade against someone never meet or encountered but based solely upon a picture of their ride. Officionados fancy themselves Sherlock.

Tim, you owe me one for doing my part to increase your web traffic during the slow months. I suspect others can do an even better evil inner projection than Judd.

Rules specifically disqualify entries that use the word troll as that Is a given and is not original.

Without gloves? I’m impressed. I break down and switch to winter gear at that point.

Please stop. This is not the place for this and I should not have commented* on your post. You are not going to change minds or change yours. Not saying go away just that there are plenty of areas and threads other than Freezing Saddles where conversations about your mode and methods of transport are appropriate. To persist could be misconstrued as being intentionally disruptive and I am sure you don’t want that.

Thanks Ed! You always certainly add a bit of color to the conversations around here.

Fun fact–it’s actually the winter when the forum has it’s peak traffic. During the summer most people are busy out riding!

Another fun fact: the majority of visits happen on weekdays between 9am and 5pm. You people need to get back to work! *judging eyes*

I’m sure this post is supposed to indicate that your car is superior to our bikes because you don’t have to wear gloves until it’s 20 degrees, but none of the rest of us are complaining about how cold it is on our bikes. We select the proper gear and ride no matter what the temperature may be.

The bicycle that got me banned from participating in FS (not just banned from using it to log FS miles). This vehicle is great on wind chill days–no face mask needed. Very stable in cross winds but the power requirements go up a lot unless I slow down. I don’t like temps below 20 because of my discomfort with freezing fingers. I haven’t had a chance to try pushing through accumulated snow. This winter i’ve been keeping up with my 100 mi/week commuting schedule. I even got in one 70 mile weekend ride pulling a trailer with a protest sign.

I bet bar mitts/pogies would help you when it is below 20. They are amazing. Do not recommend buying bike specific ones, they are way overpriced. These are cheap, look ok: http://www.partsforscooters.com/112-7-ATV-Logic-Hand-Mitts

You were baiting with your first post! It wasn’t the trike that got ya banned from FS.

My 2010 Blue Competition Cycles RC8. Probably the bike I ride second most for BAFS. Built up the frame last year with Rival 22, Easton EA90 Wheelset, 3T Stem, and Syntace Bars. Custom 40oz Crusher feed bag and Rimshot saddle bag in USMC Desert Digi courtesy of https://www.thespindleatl.com/.

I love this bike, it is fairly light (17.3 lbs as built w/o bags/bottles), very stiff, and has nimble handling without being twitchy. It makes my commutes go by a lot quicker, although commuting on a bike built for crits can be a punishing ride on crappy pavement.

I do find it funny that a Red/White/Carbon colored bike says BLUE on it like 8 times….

Here’s my contribution to the thread.

It’s a 2016 Breezer Beltway 8+ with a Burley Piccolo trailercycle. This is what I use for my daily commute and any other riding I do, save the occasional CaBi ride. (The bike-looking shadow in the upper right is my wife’s Linus Dutchi hanging up on the wall.) If I’m not responsible for transporting my daughter that day (or at least until some time after returning home), then I just unhitch the trailercycle and it’s like a whole new bike. Most days, I only have to pick up my daughter (taking her uphill – yay!), so only half of my commute is #kidical, plus any weekend rides I can convince family to join me on.

    Modifications to the store-bought configuration:

    • For extra cargo capacity: Added a front rack to my bike, rear rack to the Piccolo, and swapped the rear rack on my bike with the Burley one to accomodate the Piccolo.
    • To accommodate the front rack, as a short-term kludge, added an L-bracket for mounting the dynamo-powered light. Longer term, I’ll need to get a longer wire so I can put the light at the front of the rack.
    • Swapped the stem for a slightly shorter one (my hands were very happy when I figured that out)
    • Swapped in Crank Brothers 5050 pedals for my bike, moving the Breezer pedals to the Piccolo
    • Added a seat back/belt to the Piccolo to ensure that when my daughter gets tired of holding on/balancing, she can’t easily fall off.
    • Added more (USB rechargable) lights! (Light/camera on the front, two rear lights on the Piccolo, including a Tern Vizy light that has a nice halo effect, and a rear light on the Breezer when the fender clip holding the wiring in place snapped and then cut the cable to the dynamo-powered one)
    • Added handlebar mounted rear view mirrors (one for each of us)
    • Got a frame lock/chain combination for the Piccolo (to make it easier to lock up with my bike when necessary)
    • Swapped out the stock handlebars on the Piccolo for the cruiser-style ones to improve the reach (i.e., make it easier for my daughter to hold on) and added a rear fender.
    • Oi bells (could be called “Meh”)
    • Streamers!!!
