Hi, all. If you’re reading this you probably know that a daily part of my life is working to make the Washington area a better place for others to ride. I’d really appreciate your help with that work. Bikefest is the Washington Area Bicyclist Association’s annual fundraiser, and with the cancellation of BikeDC, making Bikefest a big success this year is especially important.

WABA, for whom I serve as President, is – without a doubt – the most kickass cycling advocacy organization east of the Mississippi.* I am so proud of the work our fantastic staff does, and they deserve the support not just of everyone who rides a bike in the Washington area, but of everyone who uses our streets. I can promise you that every dollar you give is spent carefully, with the maximum possible impact.

And let’s be clear – this is the Washington *Area* Bicyclist Association. WABA works hard around the region, from Fairfax to Prince George’s County. Just tonight I was at a meeting of regional advocates, trying to figure out how we could better improve the whole region. So no “oh, that’s a DC thing” excuses.

So please join me at Bikefest. It’s a great party. $45 for members ($55 for non-members). Drinks, buffet, table games, and auction items. Same fantastic location as last year, in the North Hall of Eastern Market. I’m sure that some of the forum folks that were there last year can offer their reviews.

Ready to go? Tell us that you’re coming, and get your tickets in advance. (And please, *do* get your tickets – this sells out every year, and our bouncers, man, they act like they don’t even know me, so I’m not sure I’ll be able to help you out at the door.)

    Tickets – https://org.salsalabs.com/o/451/p/salsa/event/common/public/?event_KEY=79639

    More details – http://www.waba.org/blog/2013/04/bikefest-is-coming-heres-why-you-should-attend/

Finally? Yes. Yes you *should* share this event.

    With very sincere thanks –

    Mark

*And probably west, too, but those Portland people get itchy.

Not to be a girl about this, but what’s the dress code for this thing?! Bike parking and little black dresses do NOT mix in my mind! Admittedly, I’m fairly new at this..!

Oh, noooo, little black dresses and biking *do* mix. :)

Last year, it had a “jazz theme” so there were a lot of flapper outfits and the like. The Monte Carlo theme doesn’t lend to anything specific, but it is indeed a great dress up event. But, you’ll see people there in all sorts of outfits (formal to t-shirts to bike gear). I found this video of the 2012 event…around :48 in you can see what people wore last year: http://vimeo.com/62198971

That all said, if you’re uncomfortable riding in heels, wear your outfit w/ another pair of shoes and throw your dancing shoes in your bag. I try to dress up a little because I’m usually seen in my spandex or commuter gear so it’s nice to show up to something wearing something girlie…even if I’m riding in on my bike. :)

    Megabeth is absolutely correct!

I won’t ride the entire way, for heaven’s sake I’d have to start out the night before, but I’ll ride up from the Smithsonian stop.

As for riding in a dress: When I leave work, I just want to go home. I don’t want to change, I don’t want to drag all my stuff out again. I run out of the building like I’m on fire. Most of the time I ride home in what I wore that day.

And let me tell you, I’ve met the most interesting people when I ride home in a dress and heels. ;)

My dress for this event is on permanent back order. Apparently child labor isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be. But I’ll dig something out of my closet.

I hate it when that happens. I will also be digging something out, but my closet and I have a love/hate relationship these days. Mostly because all the *cute* clothes are blocked from view by various hanging jerseys, bibs, etc… Thank goodness the time is almost here when I can put away all the winter gear. Who knows what kind of cute sun dresses may have been hiding behind THAT mess!

Also, I’m still not convinced I’ll be riding in whatever I dig out. Perhaps CaBi from the metro station…

Last year I biked there in sequins and heels! Just watch out for places you could snag your nylons. A well placed band-aid on the bike frame here or there never hurt anyone.

Also, another tip, I go ahead and throw on a pair bike shorts under my dress so that I have a little more protection for the sensitive parts. Typically they are my tri-shorts with a little less padding, but much better than having no padding, at all.

Riiight, Rule #5 is already engaged with wearing awesome heels, bicycling and then standing up the rest of the night in them. (And, then wearing all the gravity defying underpieces, don’t get me started…) Nice try, though. ;)

Dirt might have some extra Hello Kitty band-aids…
