Bike value

Hello,

So in an effort to get more cash for my new bike, I am selling my dad’s old road bikes. He has a Fuji Sagres and a Pacific Elite. I have never heard of these bikes as they are pretty old and long before my time. Although, they are still in good condition and perfectly ride-able with no signs of rust. Anyone know what an average value for these bikes is? 200-300 bucks?

Let me put it this way: would YOU pay $300 for these bikes?

A lot depends on the exact age – and the buyer, of course – but I’ll jump right in and say you might get $150-$200 for the Fuji. It was an okay bike, not a great one, and it’s not rare or unusual. If you ask over $200 people probably won’t even look twice. If it’s good and ready to ride, don’t go under $100 (but don’t be surprised if you don’t get much more than that either).

The Pacific is tougher to guess because that brand name has been used by several different makers, but none of them were much more than department store bicycle-like objects. $50 to someone who wants a frame for conversion, $75 to maaaaaybeee $100 for someone who wants a bike to ride if it fits perfectly and doesn’t need new tires or brakes or a chain or anything.

I had a Fuji. Loved it. It was a great bike until, ah, that car ran it over. Otherwise I very likely would still be riding it today.

Where are you selling it. I sell on Craigslist. If you are doing that type of thing, then just reverse auction the bike. What do you think you could get for it? $200? Okay, put it on Craigslist for $400 the first week. Then $380 the next week. Then $360 the next week. Eventually someone will buy it.

And whatever the value of the bike is, is what someone will pay for it. So if someone is willing to pay $300 for it, solid. If you put it up for $400, you may get the response “well, no, but I will offer $350 for it” — and you still made a profit.

Of course, this is the “I have plenty of time on my hand strategy” (and since I am regularly unloading stuff, that’s my strategy). If you just want to unload it and fast, then you want to put it up for a much lower price.

Yeah I don’t normally sell stuff on CL or any where else. I just don’t have the time with work and all. I’ll just put it up and first person to offer, I’ll sell it. Garage is getting cramped any ways.

Update: I gave up and just stored them in a storage unit. Maybe someone will bu them in another 10-years or so.

Bikes are not like wine. They don’t get more valuable as they age. If you want to get some money for them, the sooner you sell them the better.

The inexpensive bike market booms in spring and just before college classes start (is there an intern boom, too?). Even warm Februaries are going to be slow.
