Bike to School Day 2014 was a success:
We had over 100 kids on bikes in 2 long bike trains, some students riding over 3 miles to school. We had mountain bikes, kids bikes, bikes with training wheels, and scooters. Special thanks to our sponsors: VA SRTS, SAFE KIDS at Inova Hospital, Wegmans, Trader Joes, and Einstein Bagels. 1/4th of our kids biked to school yesterday. Many smiling faces.

How many kids are biking the second day though? Is there momentum but some of the parents to let their kids continue biking/walking to school?

You have to remember, this is car-centric suburban FFX CO. We don’t have the cushy infrastructure of places closer in, and after dropping the kids off at school, most of us are still looking at a.45-60 min commute. I’m happy to have kids tell me that this is their favorite day of the year, and remind parents that biking to school can be safe, and fun.

Well, it could be safe, except for the bat-shit-crazy parents driving like lunatics around the school. Just sayin’. Our local elementary school now has multiple crossing guards on different sides of the building (one an actual fairfax county police officer who’s been writing tickets for all kinds of things like illegal u-turns, etc–hell hath no fury like a bored cop on a bad detail) after multiple people were hit this year (one of them a teacher directing traffic–can’t make this stuff up). We’re actually a pretty walkable neighborhood, except for the parents who drive…because, safety.
