ParticipantThe default discount sites are http://www.nashbar.com and http://www.pricepoint.com. Occasionally Performance will have a good deal or two, but you often have to wait. In the area, you aren’t really going to get great prices but at least you will know that they fit. I would avoid Big Wheel (not even sure they sell shoes) and Revolution like the plague. Try Spokes, they have a good selection but tend to be pricey. REI has good sales from time to time as well, especially their random attic sales. I’ve ordered tons of shoes off of Nashbar and haven’t really had any problems, be sure to narrow down your “comfortable size range” and approximate out your European size.

ParticipantTwo years riding 1.5 hours a day… don’t bother with Nashbar or any of that unless you’re going to replace the exact model you have. With that kind of regular use you owe it to yourself to go to a shop, try on a bunch, and see what fits. I really like my Shimano road shoes, I’ve tried Lake and PI mountain shoes and preferred the PI due to the fit. It’s a personal thing though.

ParticipantI know shopping locally is a luxury that not all can afford… especially in this economy. I’ve always had the best luck buying cycling shoes in person.

I’ll order all sorts of nonsense shoes online but when it comes to bike shoes I have to go to the shops and try them on. Every company has a different fit. I’ve learned the hard way.

ParticipantI stopped at 2 different bike shops last night to get new road shoes. I’m going back tomorrow to buy one of the pairs I tried. FreshBikes in Arlington had EXACTLY what I wanted… Now I just need to figure out if I want the pretty new Fizik road shoes or the slightly less pretty ones from Specialized. Prolly gonna go with the pretty ones.

ParticipantThanks for the advice.
I’ve been pretty happy with the way the Specialized fit so I think I’ll see what I can find online first.

But… are they pink?
Alas the only company making mens’ shoes in pink (Bont) stopped making them last year. I love me some pink shoes, but couldn’t really afford $400 for them. I will probably regret that for as long as I can remember.
What were we talking about?
I like white shoes. Somehow I ended up with black and silver shoes… So I need white ones. That is prio 2 for me. (fit being most important.)

ParticipantI was in FreshBikes last weekend eyeing those Fizziks….mmm Kangaroo leather and race quality sail material straps…because that is what we are all missing. But no joke FB has a great selection to fit most budgets, and their people are great.
I’ve now got a pair of size 40 Giro with pink from them while there for the wife as first road shoes. She had no luck getting acclimated to them but did manage to scuff them to the point of no return.

ParticipantOther than the original laces, I’ve had good luck with Lake.
If you decie to go with same model/size, search for the shoe. Especially if they are making a slight change to the model, you can find deals on the previous model. I’ve got a brand new pair I picked up off eBay, brand new, in the box, for under $60. I won’t need them for at least a year, but the price was too good to pass up.

ParticipantCan I ask a broader question?
I’ve been using Pearl Izumi MTB sneakers with SPD cleats without much issue for a couple thousand miles now. I had planned on upgrading to Look cleats and proper shoes but after my wife’s issue I’ve been wondering what commuters use? I’m pretty stable on one foot but the tiny contact point in the rear of road shoes bothers me.

ParticipantI use Crank Brothers which are use very similar cleats to SPD. They’re two bolt so they work fine on MTB shoes. I haven’t felt the need to get proper road shoes really.

The Fiziks are crazy expensive, but you get what you pay for.

Flat pedals, with sneakers in the winter and flip flops in the summer!

Double-sided SPD and platforms. I don’t like riding more than a couple of miles on flats, hurts my knee for some reason. The only reason I don’t use normal SPD for my commute is that my commuter bike is my bar, shopping, and everything else bike, and I don’t want to clip in to ride a few blocks.
