According to Bike Score (a fully owned subsidiary of Walk Score), Hains Point scores piss poor in terms of “whether a location is good for biking.”

    Really?

Well last night (in the pouring rain) the NPS cops were out ticketing cyclists not stopping at the intersections. I passed one cyclist getting written up. They also have a huge electronic sign that says “Cyclists must obey all LAWS” (the last word is huge).

I have no problem with making sure bikers follow the laws, what frosts my bacon though is the fact that these police resources could be better utilized making sure drivers on the GW parkway follow the laws. They are far more of a menace to society than bikers doing loops at Hain’s Pt. Talk about going after low hanging fruit.

I agree. I get my (virtual) doors blown off by motorists driving on Jefferson and Madison. Talk about easy pickings for the PP! I never see them patrolling the mall traffic either in the morning (where traffic often breaks the speed limit by more than 10MPH) or in the afternoon.

While I think Hains Point is a great place to ride, I don’t feel the love from the PP.

The Park Police seem to have made it pretty clear by their full set of actions (Pedicab harassment, extreme foot dragging on CaBi stations, no bike lanes, ridiculous enforcement policies on the GW parkway and Mt Vernon parkway) that they don’t want bikes on their property, period. It’s a shame that their leadership seems to favor motorized transport so blatantly and obviously. The public deserves better.

This morning, while biking along the South side of the Lincoln, a cab almost hit me, while I was crossing in a crosswalk (and yes, I actually did stop at the meaningless stop sign before the crosswalk). Not more than 100 feet away, three PP officers were standing around, enjoying some coffee. I rode over them, described what had happened (the cab was now about 20 feet away, dropping off passengers). Their response was “we ticket it when we see it”. I mentioned that they had positioned themselves in a way that they wouldn’t be able to see the crosswalks. The Sargent was very rude, but the other two officers actually seemed to agree with me (on the side, when the Sargent wasn’t looking). Anyway, yes, NPP sucks.
