ParticipantJeez, does a ninja warrior lube your chain with unicorn oil and fill your tires with dragon breath while you’re at work? If so, I think it might justify those prices. Otherwise, I’d take my chances on the street.

ParticipantYous gotta be fricken kiddin me!
All though, I have ridden in NYC a few times, but every time it is from the hotel room and back. No way in heck would I leave a decent bike locked on a street in NYC. Although it would kill me to pay 15 bucks a day to go to work on a bike.December 14, 2012 at 10:10 am #957644mstone
ParticipantThat’s the “by law we have to take bikes, but we’d rather not” rate.

ParticipantTo be fair, I think typical garage rental is more than typical car payments in NYC.

But when the bike rate is 2/3 of the car rate, while you can fit 10 bikes into a single car space (or, more likely, in oddball corners where cars won’t fit) with less labor cost than parking a car, they’re just trying to run off the bikes.

That’s probably true. Or else they’re just charging what the market will bear. I’ve never tried to park a bike in NYC, but I can’t imagine it’s any fun.

http://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/02/23/you-can-park-your-bike-but-at-what-price/ That’s pretty reflective of what I’ve heard–nobody is gonna pay that much to park a bike.

ParticipantNot only did the bike parking rate catch my eye, but the monthly rate was about 10% of the cost of a nice bike. I don’t recall the actual car space rental but I would expect it wasn’t a similar percentage (probably $500-600 or about 1% of the auto cost per month). The hotel rate I paid was $28 per day.

ParticipantClearly you should just get a second room for your bike. It’s a few dollars more, but think how happy your bike will be.

ParticipantWhat caught my eye is that the monthly (and daily) parking rates for cars aren’t that much more there than in DC, which leads to the logical question of…when are DC property managers going to notice this and start charging us for bike parking?
Though one thing I thought of was that a lot of buildings have bike parking as an easy way to earn LEED points. Does anyone familiar with the certification know if charging for said bike parking would change that status?
