    It might give the driver a better indication of how far the rack is sticking out.

    I just put it in the slot which is consistent with how I wheeled the bike into the street. So usually. the front.

    When getting on the 29K and seeing an empty rack on the bus, the bus drivers have usually recommended that I mount my bike on the innermost rack because that is the safest spot in case the bus gets cut off by an overzealous cager.
