So, my non-biking neighbor was recently gifted a very nice carbon road bike by a friend, who gave him all the necessary details on how to pick it up from the bike room in his apartment building in DC. He goes there, picks it up, and brings it home. A few days later, he gets a call from the friend, who asks why he hadn’t picked up the bike?

You guessed it. He took the wrong bike, which apparently had the key sitting in the lock. It was an even nicer carbon road bike by the same maker. The owner had by then reported it stolen, gotten the insurance and bought an even more expensive carbon road bike. After a momentary panic in which he imagined the police scouring parking garage videos for his face, my neighbor contacted the bike’s owner and returned it.

Although technically it now belongs to the insurance company.

He’s a commercial real estate broker. They and their clients do stuff like that.
