ParticipantI just picked up a GoPro, the base model. I’m running it helmet mounted, and I do notice the extra weight a bit. Very easy to use, good quality video, though I have not edited any yet for sharing.
The second day I wore it, a car started harassing me. I pointed to the GoPro, yelled that I was filming him, and he stopped. Which is largely why I bought it, for safety.

ParticipantI’m thinking of getting helmet-mounted lights, so that’s why I was thinking of just using my iPhone on a mount to record video. My colleague recommended helmet mounted lights for riding the MVT and other pitch-black segments of the evening commute – he feels they help him spot random animals and such wandering on the trail.

ParticipantI’ll recommend a dedicated camera, specifically the garmin virb. It’s battery last me 3 hours (enough for my roundup commute). The on/off switch is a giant sliding button. It “only” costs about $100. I wouldn’t be comfortable attaching my phone to my bike and using the video on there due to super quick battery drain and the rough parts of trails I take that jostle the bajeezus out of me!

ParticipantSome food for thought there.
I hear some cyclists use two cameras – one on the bike, one on the helmet. The bike one captures the general video of the ride, and the helmet one can be used to help capture the license plate and other visual data on the motorist in the case of an incident. There’s even a rear-facing camera (Cycliq Fly6) that doubles as a tail-light.
I’ve been lucky so far in my interactions with motorists. If I had to ride more often with faster (40 mph or greater) traffic I might be investing in a camera sooner too.

ParticipantI picked up a Garmin Virb Elite on clearance through Amazon a few weeks ago, and so far I like it a lot more than my GoPro:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8amyGe-CRRU&feature=youtu.beThe overlays are easy to work with, and the editing software is very nice.. I just wish it also had color correction…

ParticipantWhich seller? I’ve been looking at getting one. I have a GoPro but I like the integration with the Garmin GPS unit.

ParticipantThese were also recommended to me as less expensive alternatives than the GoPro:
Drift Stealth 2 ($160-ish)

ParticipantThis looks cool too – a tail light that doubles as a camera – somebody claims the rear-facing video evidence helped his case vs. a motorist after an incident.

ParticipantI mounted a quad-lock to the back of my otter box defender. I had to cut the rubber outer shell to allow the quad-lock to be applied directly to the inner case. This configuration has survived several single-track crashes that would have destroyed a less tough setup.
