ParticipantThe interim Florida Ave bike lane that goes from H St to Union Market. I believe the plan is to eventually extend north of New York Ave to go all the way to U St. The only confusing thing is that occassionally you have to switch sides from the north side of the street (e.g. by H St) to the south side (e.g., by Union Market) but it’s better than riding without a bike lane!

FWIW – I think the permanent project will remove the cycle track section in favor of protected lanes on each side of the street throughout. Any continuation west of Dave Thomas Circle will be more challenging politically due to the “unfriendly” attitude of a number of ANC 5E commissioners, even though it is desperately needed. Not “Eastern Downtown” difficult, but hard nonetheless.

ParticipantA bike lane is being added to a section of Westmoreland St (McLean, VA) that did not have one. The section between Rosemont Dr and Old Chesterbrook Rd was marked with sharrows. This week they started regrading a hill to make room for the bike lane.

ParticipantIt seemed like there were strange priorities for clearing bike infrastructure in today’s snow fall in NYC.
The snow started around 7 am and two to three inches had accumulated by the time I rolled out at 11 am. The 1st Ave bike lane was not cleared, and I crossed over to Ward’s/Randall’s Island at the uncleared 102nd St pedestrian and bike bridge. The MUP around the island was in the process of being cleared by both a narrow plow and a tracked plow. Almost no one was on the island. The walk and cycle sidepath on on the Willis Ave Bridge was not clear, nor was the E 124th St cycle track (but the adjacent sidewalk by the closed pool/playground was). When I got to Central park, initially the road loop wasn’t cleared, but i did catch up to a portion that was (as well as several pedestrian paths) and then I encountered a Park sweeper clearing the sidewalks along 110th St and 5th Ave. By the time I wrapped up my slow 20 mile ride, it was easier to ride between the tire tracks on the east/west streets due to the snow conditions. The north/south avenues were nasty sloppy slush.

Gotta love those bollards!! Probably mostly invisible on a gray, cloudy day.

ParticipantThe Ward’s Island Bike and Pedestrian Bridge over the Harlem River. It was plowed yesterday afternoon after I rode over it. Not plowed from today’s light snowfall.

Participant#BikeInfrastructure – The Sister City Friendship Bridge connects the west and east sides of Rockville that are divided by I-270. Opened in 2007, this bike/ped bridge is named in honor of the 50-year sister city relationship between Rockville and Pinneberg, Germany.

ParticipantEast Coast Greenway
Today I rode the stretch along Parkway Drive in Clark NJ, which follows the Rahway River Park system through Union County NJ, as part of the nearly 100 miles of Greenway in New Jersey passing through bustling urban areas — Trenton, New Brunswick, Newark, and Jersey City — as well as quiet suburban settings and more rural landscapes than one might expect. The route includes 36 miles of the much enjoyed D&R Canal Towpath.

ParticipantThe E 90th St bike lane in Yorkville a block from Gracie Mansion. Weekends it ends up being extra double parking for the soccer parents at Asphalt Green.

ParticipantThis dual, separated sidewalk and multi-use trail only goes for a short distance on Sunrise Valley Drive in Reston but it was like a breath of fresh air when I came upon it. Note the bike parking on the left.
