My feeling is that bike ed belongs at the elementary school level, not high school.

Don’t have a strong opinion on whether or not Arlington “deserves” a Gold status, but I will say that D.C. is doing awesome. Compared with just two years ago bicycle facilities have greatly improved, including protected bikelanes on Pennsylvania, near Union Station etc. So far, we have virtually none in Arlington where there are ton of places they could easily be built. Clarendon, Wilson, Quincy are all great candidates for protected lanes. Hopefully Arlington will catch up to DC!

Wouldn’t mind seeing the “bike ghetto” side of Alexandria catch up to Arlington. ;)

The folks at Visit Loudoun were only vaguely aware of where the nearest bike parking was. In fact the concept seemed a bit puzzling. This a bit a half mile from the W&OD. Be thankful for Arlington.

DC agrees with you. 2nd grade, to be specific. http://wtop.com/dc/2015/08/back-school-d-c-students-add-bike-riding-lessons/

I’ve been trying to get APS to do the same. Jason, do you want to lead the effort? I can put you in touch with the people in DC who made it happen, and the Phoenix Bikes people who could (hopefully) come up with a maintenance-in-class plan, as well as supportive people in APS and ArlCo staff and leadership?

THAT’S what Gold communities do, Arlington.

I’m jealous–when I was a kid we had bowling and square dancing in PE, never bikes.

We played a lot of kickball, and floor hockey. We only learned to ride bikes if our parents/other adults bothered to teach us. I continue to be AMAZED by APS (but this is coming from a poor, semi-rural rustbelt community)

Thanks for the offer. We set up a maintainance class with Steven from Phoenix last year. It went awesome. He is a great guy, that was able able to teach a bunch of kids a ton of information. We will be doing it again next year. As for now, I think Greg, rule10, and I want to focus on our school. Last year the school approved us to install a maintenance rack next to the bike racks. the kids designed it, and will be building it themselves….now the hard part, doing it.
    Thanks again

Ok let me edit that, and think about it. It does sound like a good idea, that could make a real difference. Let me to talk to Greg, he is the real biker, I’m just his fat sidekick he waits for on hills. Hmmmmmmmmmm
