ParticipantThat looks very similar to what I carry. I tend to leave my “quick change/make me presentable” kit at work during the week and only carry it home on Fridays to restock or for that occasional need to look presentable on the weekend.

Check out all the stuff that Long Now Foundation Director of Operations Laura Welcher brings with her on her daily bike commute in the San Francisco Bay Area. There’s an awful lot in her bag, but it makes sense! She’d make a good mountaineer (expert at repackaging and consolidating essentials.) I especially like the extracted and tied off dental floss, but I’m tickled that there’s a tire lever and multitool in the same tiny bag as masquera, blush, and bobby pins!

ParticipantThat’s a lot of stuff to carry back and forth. Better to leave most of it at the office. For toiletries, I simply buy two of everything: one set at work and another at home. For items I use a lot, say K-cups for my coffee maker, I simply order boxes of the stuff online and have them delivered to my office.

ParticipantShe brings Gas-x with her on her ride? Call me crazy, but I’m on the outside when I ride. When the need arises I just make my own wind. Don’t need a pill to cure that.

ParticipantAll that and no spare tube?

She’s got Super Patch, why would she need a spare tube?

ParticipantGiven my limited experience with the Super Patch, I’d much rather have a spare tube…

ParticipantI agree with KLizotte. Thats ALOT to carry back and forth daily… I leave a makeup bag and work. It cost me $80 to put together a full 2nd set of makeup, and it’s money well spent.
My only “take with me daily” items are a spare tube, mini air pump, tire repair kit, a tiny first aid kit, and my eyeglasses since I ride in wearing contacts. Fits into the bottom of a pannier bag, or a very small backpack. Everything else (clothes, ulock, makeup, spare contacts and toothbrush) I keep at work, and only replenish when I need to. I even keep a spare set of undergarments at work so I don’t need to transport those daily. I keep everything in the 1 cabinet that I lock since I tell my staff they can dig through the other cabinets when they have emergency coffee/snack needs

ParticipantI carry a lot of stuff on my commute, but I think much of what’s in the “Transformer Bag” is overkill: like everyone else, I think all the personal stuff should be duplicated at home and at work. I do carry my work clothes in with me every day, but something like a toothbrush is really not necessary for the commute! I confess, though, that I carry all kinds of utility stuff, because I expect to run errands on my way to or from work, just like I would in my car; I have spare bungee cords, lock, and such, all the time. Plenty of room for rain gear, too, which is ready in its own bag, so I don’t have to gather it all up before putting it in the pannier. I put a front rack on my amazon.com wish list, so I can carry even more stuff (in case anyone wants to get me that for my birthday, one month from today!
).

Falls Church to DC. Every day.

ParticipantI carry way more stuff than I need in my backpack everyday, especially as I have my own business complete with shower, kitchen, etc…. so really I could ride sans backpack pretty easily. But I like knowing I have everything on me in case of an emergency; Lock, spare tubes for all kinds of bikes, tools, rain jacket, slip-on shoes if I have to walk far, etc. This has come in handy so many times…plus, the few days I ride without the backpack I feel like a rockstar.

I’m not sure I’d be getting good value out of that exchange. I’d do it once, though.

ParticipantI discovered extra two pairs of socks (clean) and someone else’s hat in the bottom of my bag so I have no room to judge anyone’s packratting habits.
