I just used the Bike Arlington blinkies. I was out later than I expected and had no other lights. Very handy to have in my bag. What BA swag have you found useful?

Yesterday I went to the dealership for a “Well-Car Checkup.” I didn’t have the patience to hang around the service lobby reading old editions of Your Volkswagen and You or watch ESPN. The courtesy shuttle was going to be a huge hassle and I live a little too far to walk home. Fortunately I had Spartacus in the back of the car so I pulled him out, grabbed my Bike Arlington bag and took off. Ha, ha dealership — I’m no longer your prisoner.

Tim Kelley is keeper of the swag (KoS). It gets distributed at Bike Arlington events like the fair and happy hours.

    The socks! Love em.

I knew I should have stayed in town for the fair. KoS, nice acronym.

Do we have to answer questions three, ere the other side we see? You know, like the Keeper of the Bridge of Death? I do not wish to be cast into the Gorge of Eternal Peril. I am not aware of my favorite color.

We give out lots of great swag at Bike to Work Day, the County Fair and other similar public events. Everyone who attended the Forum Meetup last June got a nice bag of stuff too.

Sounds like it’s time for another Forum get together?

I use the reflective straps many times per day.

I distribute them too. I’ve been giving them away to the ninjas that I meet on the trail. In fact I got my first “Oh shit, Not you again” from a runner who refuses to wear reflective gear on the path in the dark.

Haha! I started commuting at night and see the same thing… or not. Then you get the opposite. Saw a runner last night carrying a full size flashlight.

I’ve been pimping reflective gear on the path for 6 years now. Last year Bike Arlington helped me out by giving me a supply to distribute. Even with all this time handing out reflective bands, vests, dog leashes, etc., I still encounter 5 or 6 “ninjas” every day. There are some long sections of the W&OD that are not lighted. When navigating these sections early in the morning (between 0430 and 0530), these people are impossible to see without high-powered lights, that blind others on the trail. Little by little I have been wearing them down. Surviving a few close-calls has helped them see that maybe wearing a simple leg or wrist band might not be a bad idea.

There are some who will never take responsibility for their own safety. I keep trying though.

    Pete
