I recently saw a reference to a new bicycle touring board game that is currently on Kickstarter, and it looked interesting enough to share.

Here is the Kickstarter page: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/openroadgames/the-open-road-0

The map is of the contiguous United States, and the goal is to “ride” from coast-to-coast taking whichever is the most efficient route stopping at big cities, small cities, landmarks, campsites, and more, each having different effects on a player’s progress. Players have a supply of money and a supply of energy that they must manage effectively in order to progress. I think it’s neat that players have “panniers” that they will use to hold their cards.

Note: I am not a backer of this Kickstarter (I am considering it), but I figured I should share it with my fellow bike folks.

    I’ll bet Komorebi buys it.

Komorebi – Can I play with your bike touring game? Asking for a friend.

There’s something wrong with a game that only rewards the most “efficient” way. Aren’t we out thee to enjoy the ride, how do you get rewarded for that?

Wait! I think you gave away who your friend is.

Nooooooo! YOU just gave it away…

Komorebi – Steve O wanted me to ask you if I could play with your bike touring game. He is extremely concerned about whether I will get to play this game.

All right, I’ll bite. I backed the Kickstarter. Game night if/when the game arrives? I’ll bring The Open Road if Steve O promises to bring Velocipedes Against Humanity.

I love board games. Could talk the whole 50 States Ride about board games. I’m so incessant about it when I get going that you’ll finish the ride faster than ever just to get away from me.

But another bicycle game that came out recently is Flamme Rouge. It’s a bicycle race game where you control a team of two cyclists and decks are used for movement. Here’s a video review of Flamme Rouge. The review if from Shut Up and Sit Down, a very popular game review site. They’re a bit extra goofy in this video, but get past that and they give you an excellent idea of how the game works. They recommend it.

I have at least a hundred, maybe more board games at my house (95% of which belong to my husband…he has issues.) NONE of them have to do with bikes though*. Not sure how that happened. I’m seriously considering backing this kickstarter just to fix this problem.

*At least 3 have to do with cats though. So I guess I have issues too…

Based on the 2 posts above, I can see bikes & board games in this group’s future. Like maybe when it’s too hot outside to ride :) or after a hot ride!

Judd and Steve-o are being modest, he was actually asking for me.

But yeah, that sounds like a blast! Both the game and the concept of a “bikes and board games” night. Since I love alliteration, I could bring Belgian beer or brownies. 😮
