The bike parking at Ballston mall is so bad they have intimidate their customers into using it. They apparently noticed that the lousy wave rack didn’t have enough capacity so they added the even worse wheel bender. God forbid they put in some nicely spaced U racks that people might actually want to use–that would mess up the vast empty wasteland in front of the hechtmacys.

Update: the upload process munched the picture. The sign reads “USE BIKE RACK ONLY / Bikes will be removed by security if chained anywhere else on Ballston Common Mall Property.”

Pretty sure there is a thread on this somewhere, and I believe there is a place to send requests and needs but my search skills have failed me. I just wanted to point out a few places that really could use additional bicycle racks and see if anyone else has noticed high traffic/cycling areas that are in need:

Shirlington: I am always shocked at the lack of designated bicycle racks in the town center. It would appear that bicycle traffic is increasing exponentially in the area and yet I am always left locking my bicycle to a bench or street sign.
Whole Foods (Clarendon): Besides my allergy for paying $10.00 for soup, the lack of truly designated bicycle storage has left me no choice but to shop at Trader Joe’s, who provide bike racks directly out front, and I can buy produce without selling plasma!

    Other places?

I just filled out a request on the Arlington County website requesting bike racks in Shirlington, esp in front of Cap City. A couple of years ago I wrote to the property manager of Shirlington requesting more racks; he followed up with a response asking where they should go to which I responded then nothing happened. Now there are lots of racks by the bus terminal but that isn’t terribly convenient or visible to people who don’t know the area.

Guess whose redevelopment plan is going to have to go through the site plan approval process? :) Thanks for pointing this out so that I can make sure high quality racks are included in their redevelopment.

Interestingly enough, the Whole Foods in Tenleytown does have bike parking that is inside of the parking garage to the right of the door. It’s actually fairly convenient. Meanwhile, Safeway at Beacon Hill has signs saying no skatingboards, bicycles, etc and 0 bike parking. When I contacted their corporate office, a manager was supposedly going to follow up with me. That was November. Seems about the right time to inquire again.
