Adventure Cycling’s Bike Travel Weekend is June 1-3 this year. I’m hosting a Bicycle Fun Club overnight bikepacking ride to celebrate this year. We’ll leave from Georgetown Waterfront Park on Saturday and ride the C&O Canal for about 40-50 miles, camp on the canal and enjoy the outdoors and each other’s company. We’ll return to DC the next day. I’m planning on tent camping, however if there is enough interest, I’ll look into renting one of the lockhouses which have beds and are indoors. Ride pace will likely be a leisurely 12-13 because the canal is really pretty and I’ll probably want to stop and take lots of nature pictures. We’re likely to see geese, deer, ducks, fish, and heron.

If you’re wondering how the heck to carry camping gear on a bike, ask for help here. There’s several folks that have bike camped before that can help.

If you’re planning on coming or thinking about it, please let me know on this thread. If you’re totally in for sure, then you should consider signing up for the event on the link below. If you do, you’ll receive a Bike Travel Weekend sticker and also be entered in the drawing for a Co-Motion Bicycle.

What a great trip! I highly recommend a stay in a Lockhouse. Beautiful building and it was furnished with lots of chairs.

    The start at Dogtag Bakery:

Pedaling on the towpath. Steve O and Erin rode out with us for a bit before turning back.

    Bikes at the Lockhouse.

We enjoyed a couple of hours sitting out back. The rains came just in time for dinner.

It would be hard to beat the fine photos already posted so I’ll just say thanks to Judd for organizing this gig and deciding to book the lockhouse. Best decision ever. And a big thanks to Komorebi for schlepping the beer. Anticipating those cold brews got me through the last 4 miles while I was hallucinating white buildings in the distance.

And seriously, no one else stopped for hand cranked ice cream from the Girls Scouts at Riley’s Lockhouse? Or was that another hallucination?

where is this Like button of which folks speak? Or is that something you have to reach a certain Level to get?

I’ve only been here a few months, so maybe I’m just not there yet?

That’s it! We can suffer the travails of outrageous fortune only for so long. Until the ELITE button is returned, I call for a general strike against Bike Arlington!! And I call on KelOnWheels to be the Honorary Leader of our movement.

Until the ELITE button is returned, No More Posts to the Forum!

We shall over come! The Whole World is Watching! Was it over when Germany bombed Pearl Harbor??

Adventure Cycling sent me an e-mail letting me know that they’ve extended the deadline to enter the Bike Travel Weekend sweepstakes until June 30th. The prize is a Co-Motion Cycles Divide bike and an Amtrak trip for two to Glacier National Park. Just looking at some of the other events, it doesn’t look like there are too many people entered in the sweepstakes, so the odds are favorable. If you’d like to enter, just click the “enter” button at the bottom of my trip details page by June 30.

I guess some lumberjack tweeted about it or something?
I didn’t note any photos from the C&O trip on their Facebook page, although I breezed through them pretty quickly.
