I spent a week in the Netherlands when I was in college (visiting Dutch girlfriend who lived in The Hague) and I kick myself now because I was totally oblivious to anything bike related. I remember being amazed at all the bikes parked at the train station in Amsterdam, and now looking at the photos I see lots of bikes parked everywhere, but really that’s it…and neither the girlfriend-at-the-time nor her parents rode bikes.

Ditto. It seemed to me that there were just a bit more cycling in Amsterdam than there was in Berlin (where I lived at the time), so it wasn’t remarkable. Of course, this was the late 1990s, so maybe it was similar… Anyway, I can’t wait to go back knowing what I now know.
