Anyone have good recommendations for Bib Knickers (ie, down to your shins) that aren’t fleece lined and only inteded for cool/cold weather riding?
I prefer knickers over straight bib shorts for riding, year round. I’ve seen a few options out there, but hoping for suggestions.
I’ve got some Ibex wool knickers that are pretty awesome…no lining, just straight wool blended with spandex. I probably wouldn’t wear them on days over 70F, but they have a really comfortable temperature range and don’t make me overheat.

This gave me the warm fuzzies just reading it. Excited for fall.

ParticipantI bought some Castelli Sorpasso Bib Knickers last winter and I really like them. They’re a little “flash” for my liking but I couldn’t swallow the cost of non-descript Rapha version, plus the Castelli’s were on sale at Bicyclehub for $80.00…. too good a deal! They are warm in the necessary spots but also breath really well where it’s necessary. Their proprietary fabric has an odd red tint to it, but in terms of fit and quality they are excellent. Also, I wish all my bibs had the same chamois as these… very comfortable!

ParticipantDoes anyone make decent cold weather bibs for the 2xl or 3xl set? I’m talking something that will handle down to -20 degrees.

ParticipantMinus 20 sounds like it’s time to switch to ski bibs. Does Sorel make an SPD clip boot?

I’ll be doing that but I need to get outside in the winter time and ride or I’m going to go insane in Minneapolis this winter.

ParticipantI second Dickie’s comment about the Castellis. They’re the only ones that I’m aware of that are officially imported into the US.
Nalini makes them and they’re often available through NonStopVelo on eBay. You just need to read the descriptions carefully. They’ll tell you which ones are fleece lined and which ones are not.
As for the -20 degree weather riding, your best bet is to layer appropriately rather than rely on one garment. Wicking base layer, thermal layer then something to cut the wind. Perhaps the Layers 101 thread can help with that.

I’ll definitely check that out but the set up you describe is what most of my friends that bike year round do there. Moreno wool, shoes covers, a solid wind breaker and Moose mitts are apparently the keys to not freezing or staying stuck on the trainer in January and February.

Cool. You know the routine. I rode through a few winters in Minnesota and it wasn’t easy. It was much better than getting stuck indoors though.

I don’t know of any knickers that aren’t fleece lined but you could try something like these in conjunction with bib shorts:

Black would work best I guess but it seems their stock is limited.I only own one set of knickers and the few times I’ve worn them I’ve overheated. The last time I wore them was on the Kill Will ride… so not sure when I will break them out again. I just do leg warmers with bib shorts through the winter.

I’ve got four pair of cycling knickers, two are very lightweight (Btwin from the Decathlon European big box sporting goods chain and cheapo Castelli from Nashbar) that I use either for wet rides in the 50s or 60s, or under my winter tights. One pair is a heavier lycra from Performance that I’ll use in the 40s and 50s, and the fourth is Cannondale light fleece that I wear in the upper 30s and 40s or under my tights. When it gets below 50, I wear merino wool ski socks with them.

This won’t keep you warm, but TwinSix has two pretty cool Minnesota cycling t’s that you might find interesting:

Those Artcrank jerseys are cool. As ever, I wish I had more cash in the slush fund; I would have ordered one.
