I never knew you were a scout leader….

If you’d ride that bike to work more often, that car would never park near you. In fact, I think a lot of cars and others would give you a wide berth….

New post from the folks at CWG – they’re really not f*&kin’ around with this one: http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/capital-weather-gang/post/hurricane-sandy-may-be-unprecedented-in-east-coast-storm-history/2012/10/26/4f6660e6-1f6e-11e2-9cd5-b55c38388962_blog.html

Maybe it’s just being a Floridian that does this to me, but this storm doesn’t even rate a 1 on the danger scale. We’ll get tropical storm-force winds if the track holds true. I love these days, listening to the rain, holed up in your house watching the wind blow the trees around… going boating down your street. And of course it’s kill or be killed on the streets. Maybe my memories are colored by all those hurricane parties?

Seriously, stay safe if you have a lot of trees in your yard or nearby. This storm itself isn’t going to hurt anyone around here but the trees might. If you have a yard with trees, take this as a reminder to get them looked at by an arborist or at least tree service to make sure that what’s standing is healthy and safe.

As someone with intimate familiarity with national building codes, I can say that the design loads for wind in this area are significantly more lenient than those in FL.

Required wind loads for this area are to withstand a 90mph gust for 3 seconds (which equates to about 21psf). When the weather people are talking about sustained winds in the 60s and 70s, I do get a bit nervous. Also remember that FL gets hit with hurricanes pretty frequently, which means most of the fragile old construction has long ago been destroyed and replaced with stuff that actually adheres to a building code. :) We don’t exactly get events like this all that often here.

Let’s just be honest and state the obvious, even if it’s sunny out, somehow major utilities will lose power for days on end. So, yah, I’m just thinking what things do I want? Some booze, utz pretzels, and finding wherever I put my car chargers for cell phones. Problems solved.

Yup, if the wind gets over about 10 mph my power runs away screaming. I must remember to go buy dehydrated dog food and fill up the car.

I’m fortunately on the same piece of the grid as Reston Hospital, so my power never stays out for long. My place of work in Great Falls, on the other hand…

Moving in to my new house on Sunday, hopefully before the rain/wind really moves in. I can’t imagine a better way to figure out if there are any leaks, power problems, or drainage issues…but I would really prefer if not all the potential problems manifest themselves at the same time.

I can see Mount Vernon Hospital out my back window. We don’t share a power grid tho.

It’s also a full moon on Monday. Odds of going into labor during Frankenstorm? Ugh.

At the grocery store today, my normally-sane husband came loaded with water. I got him to pare it back to 5 gallons.

Maybe your two observations are not unrelated in his mind. Watch out if he gets home and starts trying to find a sheltered space somewhere so he can build a fire to boil water in the middle of the storm if need be . . .
