Drivers in D.C. may soon be getting a little more in the mail from the DMV: The agency is planning to work with cycling organizations to get out information about bike safety.
Thousands of cyclists hit the roads today in D.C. as part of Bike to Work Day. One of them was D.C. Council Member Brianne Nadeau.
“I took Capital Bikeshare from my home on 14th Street,” Nadeau says.
Before biking to work, she wrote a letter to the director of the D.C. DMV. She wants the agency to include in its mailings information about how to drive safely around cyclists.
“As a driver, I’ve never really received any communication from the DMV about what to do around bike lanes,” Nadeau says.
In her letter, she noted that the District has the second-highest rate of bike commuters in the nation, among big cities.
A few minutes after hitting send on the letter, Nadeau got a response from DMV Director Lucinda Babers. Babers says the DMV has already worked with cycling advocacy groups in the past, but that “additional efforts are always beneficial,” and promised to implement the proposal.
