I’ve gone down to the Occoquan/Woodbridge area a few times now and want to know if there are better road bike friendly routes that I could be taking to get there from Alexandria (let’s assume the start point is King Street Metro) along with recommendations for roads to explore down there.
The route I generally use is here: http://www.strava.com/activities/75430262
It mostly uses bike lanes, off-street trails, and neighborhood streets, save for the sections of Lorton Rd near Furnace Rd (I don’t ride the CCT on my road bike). Any ideas?
There’s always US Bicycle Route 1. (see this map.) It looks like it takes the same route as you around Lorton… things kind of bottleneck there, including in terms of good cycling routes, so there is only so much you can do, but the route down there from OT Alexandria is different, and arguably more scenic.
All this is with the caveat that I haven’t ridden this myself… only researched it as part of a possible multi-day bike trip to family in Hampton Roads, but I think it’s part of the ACA’s Atlantic Coast route, so it would have that endorsement, too. I assume others here have ridden it, however, and may be able to offer some comments on it.
