Are there any worth while? My uncle is getting into cycling and thats where he lives. I don’t really know my way around there.
Also are there any good mups? There’s The Bike Shop at the southeast corner of the intersection of 28 & 29, with a mix of new & used. Bull Run Bicycles in Manassas which I’ve heard good things about but haven’t been in (I really should get around to that). The Bike Lane in Reston usually has some transportation type bikes. Then toward Fairfax is Spokes where 50 & 29 merge. And REI at the Government Center. All you can do is wander the shops and see if it’s the vibe you’re looking for. It also depends on what kind of bike you’re looking for and what you want to spend.
As far as MUPs, nothing really in Centreville. For other biking, it depends on where you are; 28, 29, and 66 chop things up pretty badly. Some of the larger roads (e.g., Braddock, 28) have sidepaths along parts but those are about as fun as riding next to a highway can be. There’s the stream valley system with disconnected pieces in Cub Run, Flat Lick, and Rocky Run. Heading out Compton Road you can get to some decent rides, but that’s all on-road and not at all right for someone not comfortable riding with cars on low-volume but narrow roads. Also possible to work your way through Manassas to the Prince William parkway sidepath and make a loop with Dumfries Road or hit Prince William Forest Park. Or even cross at Occoquan and work over to the MVT. (That’s not for the beginner/faint of heart.) From south of 66 it’s possible to get to the W&OD via sidepaths on Braddock & FFX county parkway (but it’ll be something like 20 miles round trip just to get to the W&OD). It’s also usually possible north of 66, but more complicated.

ParticipantGiven mstone’s description, I never want to live in or around Centreville. Augh.

ParticipantIt’s probably better than half the country, but it sure isn’t Amsterdam.

ParticipantWow that’s alot of info. It definitely sounds like i will have a hard time getting hin to stay ob two wheels. I hate to have him need a car to go riding. He bought a bike online so bike shop prices don’t matter to much yet. I was hoping to hook him up with some local shop rides and ect. Maybe the best plan is to start him out on roads with traffic. I will have to think about this.

ParticipantI bought my single speed Globe Daily One from A-1 cycling years ago in Herndon…. not exactly in Centreville, but it was an excellent experience and maybe worth checking out. Friendly staff who knew there stuff and the mechanic on duty at the time was excellent. I really liked the casual and unpretentious atmosphere. Hopefully it hasn’t changed.

ParticipantI used to commute from Chantilly into dc. There is (or used to be) a very poorly maintained “bike” path along the north side of route 50. I would take that to centreville road, right on Franklin farm, and the then on the now also (but getting better) poorly maintained ffx county parkway trail and then onto the WOD.

ParticipantThis is where specific location becomes important. The side path along 50 is discontinuous. In some parts there’s a trail along the north side, in some places there’s a trail along the south side, in some places there’s a service road on the south side, and in some places there’s nothing but a suicidal trip on a divided highway with cars going over 60mph. (One of the projects funded by the recent bond referendum should fill in some of those gaps.) It’s usually possible to put together some kind of a route–and biking on quiet neighborhood streets or stream valleys is frankly more pleasant than a side path anyway–but it is harder than just following a road. Best bet is to sit down with Google maps, check out the overhead pics, and also just explore. There are a lot of little connector paths which don’t show up on the maps but which you can find if you spend a couple of days biking through the neighborhoods.

ParticipantIt’s almost impossible to give specific locations, I can never remember where the path ends or what. Just knowing there is a path should be enough to get you out to investigate, right? Maybe if enough people see how poor the bike infrastructure is we can get it improved.

ParticipantI mean the specific location someone is starting from, to give better advice.

ParticipantOn a side note, any particular reason for the “sent from your mom’s house” signature line? It’s kind of distracting to read in every post. Are you typing that in manually into every post? If so, why? This isn’t [four] c h a. n.

ParticipantLol my signature is automatically posted in every post. I am on more than one forum and don’t want it to be to specific for any of them. The one forum wants a link to my build thread so that I can sell anything in the classifieds. I always thought it would be awkward to have a link to my honda ruckus on a bicycle forum but i may change it for you. It is tapatalk that post my signature automatically.

ParticipantI would recommend removing your signature; whether one finds it humorous or not — I don’t, perhaps because I am no longer in middle school or perhaps the novelty just wore off after the 17th time I read it
— signatures is just not something used on this forum.

ParticipantI like his signature! Makes me laugh when I read it. A little bit less each time though. Ok I don’t like it…
