ParticipantStorm risk downgraded. The thuderstorms that rolled through this morning pulled in some cooler air and calmed things down a bit. But all that sun we’re seeing now is cauing a bit more agitation in the atmosphere, so still plenty of chance of some storms popping up here and there through the afternoon. Ride safe, folks.

ParticipantAfter taking Metro, if we don’t get hail, I’m going to be ticked.

I do believe that this group of bike commuters may just be even more on top of the current weather trends than the group of kayakers I often surround myself with. That is saying quite a bit!
Oh, and now I’m miffed that I didn’t ride today.

ParticipantI’m reading different forecasts on NBC Washington and the Weather Channel. NBC is still saying that the storms could roll in between 4 and 8 pm. But the hourly forecast on Weather.com indicates only scattered T-storms this afternoon, with the more severe weather not arriving until about 8 pm.
Both sources have been wrong in the past, so figure that into your plans.

Same here. I just got my bike back from the shop last night, all spiffy with shiny new components, and I didn’t want to get it all messed up on the first day. Rule 9 failure. Or perfect day failure. Whichever.

ParticipantWhile we got off lightly this morning, there is still a big ugly blob on the radar headed this way and it doesn’t look like it is breaking up as it comes over the mountains. It does look as though what was a strong leading edge has diminished in intensity as it traveled through West Virginia. Keep your fingers crossed.

Uh oh… the threat for major severe has moved south of us to VA/NC. We should still get some heavy rain and storms probably, but not the worst of it.
If you loop the radar now, you can see the major squall line out there now is heading SE instead of E towards us. Bah humbug.
Although in this case that may be a good thing considering the “Particularly Dangerous Situation” that SPC issued for that area.

ParticipantCaBi is a great option for spur-of-the-moment rides, including lunchtime rides and casual tourist rides around the Mall. It’s also good for short rides in the rain (but NOT in thunderstorms). The bikes are going to get wet anyway, so you might as well give them some attention and take one out for a spin. Good way to keep all that rain off a personal bike, or when you left a personal bike at home because of the weather forecast.
(Disclaimer: This post assumes that you work or live near a CaBi station.)

Whoa, that’s a relief. Living next to a wooded area with several huge oaks has made me a nervous wreck in storms like this.
Bad news for the rest of VA though. I remember 2 or 3 years ago when the area around Gloucester got tornadoes, with a few deaths. I drove through the area afterward and it was scary.

ParticipantWe’re still going to get something, just not as bad as it may have been. The sun staying out for a few hours now will definitely provide some convective current to these storms.

ParticipantTORNADO Warning for Loudon County VA heading into northern Montgomery County MD.
This would be a bad time to be doing laps at Sugarloaf!

ParticipantMeanwhile, weather.com’s hourly forecast shows sun from now until past 8pm tonight…
