The Knog Oi bell is a good choice if you want something streamlined and cheap. It’s a (one) ping (only Vasiliy) sound, as you state…not super loud, but good enough, I’ve found.

If it’s for a road bike, you need something like this – https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00ELNGTC0/ref=twister_B00GOU3796?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1. Road bike handlebars don’t easily take most bells.

There were some that didn’t like the Knog Oi. I can’t find the old thread for when it was kickstarted, but there were some complaints. One was that the spring was too weak. Both of mine are still working fine, but you can see that the hammer is pulled away from the ring a bit, so eventually the spring will likely be sprung. One thing I like about it is that it has always worked in the rain, rather than giving that clunk that Incredibells do. It also works with road handlebars.

http://bikearlingtonforum.com/showthread.php?10150-Innovative-bike-lights-bell-and-navigation-system had a lot of chatter about it. On the plus side, they’ve gotten quite a bit cheaper at retail (so are in line with the Kickstarter “discounted” price)

The Knog Oi bell is great if you want to buy something from Amazon and then immediately throw it in the trash. It doesn’t look like it’s available on Amazon, but Spurcycle bells have a great ping and then resonate forever. They’re a bit pricey though.

I’ve been using them on my bikes for a while now with no problems. I mean, I don’t expect them to last years and years or anything, but at the price you can buy like 3 of them for the price of one Spurcycle (I had one of the first Spurcycle bells and it was shit and broke after a few months, BTW)…what’s your beef lumberjack?

Probably broke the damn thing with those huge Lumberjack thumbs.

Did you contact Spurcycle support? They are pretty awesome; I assume they would/will replace it.

My from-Kickstarter Spurcycle is doing great. But I’d buy a Crane now rather than pay post-kickstarter pricing.

The Oi bells get bad reviews, but I’d believe they work well enough for most usage. They certainly are nice and low profile.

They look good, but they’re really quiet, like a tiny little xylophone. The real issue is that it seems like most trail users don’t hear/recognize it as a bell.

I have conceptually started planning out my next commuter bike which will have an electric bell, car horn and whistle built in.

My broken Spurcycle accidentally got thrown out when I was cleaning out my old shed, so yeah….

I can understand why Oi bells get bad reviews, but I can go an entire ride without dinging my bell once and I have three bikes to equip, so I prioritize aesthetics and price over durability and volume/clarity. If price wasn’t an issue, I’d pick up another Spurcycle, but I haven’t run into reliability issues with the Ois that might convince me to spend the extra cash for Spurcycles.

That’s exactly why I like it–it’s not so loud as to be interpreted as “get the eff out of my way” by pedestrians and others not used to the convention of warning before passing. I can still use my voice if I need to be loud.

I’m too lazy to check but I assume they sell Incredibells, which have been my go-to for years.

So, if I were in your position where I didn’t actually need a bell, I’d definitely go the cheapest and most aesthetically pleasing option of just not putting a bell on my bike at all! :)

Well, I only just put a bell on my road bike like two months ago, so I resisted as long as I could. But since we moved, my commute is more on-trail than it used to be (used to be no trail at all), so that kinda made it more of a priority, particularly since I much prefer dinging to shouting.
