ParticipantI knew there was a long bike lane on Kansas Ave but never had an excuse to use it until tonight. A friend and I agreed to meet for a drink near Fort Totten Metro, and Hellbender appeared to be the closest brewery. So, after finishing work I headed up 15th and 11th Streets, and then into NE DC on Kansas. It was a pretty chill route even at rush hour.
Hellbender is in a low-key building, tucked away at a dead-end, and hardly marked. If it hadn’t been for the bike rack out front I might have missed it.
They serve eight beers: four standing and four seasonal. Flights come in sets of four. Do the math!
My friend and I agreed that the saison was the pick of them. Interesting, because it’s not a style I’m normally drawn to. Pictured is half of a red ale, also pretty good.
They sell bags of potato chips but otherwise there is no food — supposedly food trucks sometimes park outside. I’m sure they wouldn’t object to outside food, pizza delivery, etc. Kid friendly.
It was criminal to spend such a nice evening at a place with no patio.

ParticipantThe wife and I took the day off for a little bike ride lunch date and headed out to Mad Fox.
IMG_20170224_110809484_HDR by Jon, on FlickrThis is the Defender APA, which they say is hoppy and crisp. It was both of those things, though it tasted more in the direction of a pilsner than an APA.

ParticipantStop #2 was Caboose for a Casey Jones Rye Pale Ale. Thumbs up.

ParticipantKomorebi, Judd Lumby & I went to Mad Fox after we finished the strava art fox.
I got two small pours as part of their Barleywine Festival: Headcracker 2016 and Slobberknocker 2015. Both were delicious.

ParticipantFantastic team ride to Port City. I had a Monumental IPA and Colossal 6 Russian Imperial Stout. You should also try the Colossal 6 Russian Imperial Stout.

ParticipantImagine if Ruby Tuesdays brewed their own beer. This is Hops. It is fine. Our server was very nice, although he brought out the wife’s salad and my chili before the kids’ food came out, which is simply not how it is done when you are serving a family with small(ish) children. Nevertheless. The beer was red and forgettable.
IMG_20170226_161335592 by Jon, on FlickrAlso 30 miles hauling the kids in a day is just about my limit. I’m pretty sure my legs aren’t speaking to me.

ParticipantBeerneuring #3
Port City. Because this was a thoroughly Alexandria day, after the breakfast with Mayor.
The beer: Collosal 6, a Russian Imperial Stout.
It was very malty and had an aroma of dark fruit, I thought. Pretty good.

This time I remembered to take the picture before finishing the beer.

ParticipantThis one is a little late (from the 18th). Since it was the day before Monster Cross, I decided to do an easy ride and hit up Port City for their Pedals & Pints ride. Of course, I had a beer (or two) afterwards.
I was really excited to try the Colossal 6, which is their newest release. It is a Russian Imperial Stout and was quite delicious. At 10.2%, I was glad I had eaten a doughnut right before I started to drink it. It was a very flavourful stout, and I would highly recommend it.

After that hefty beer, I had a Ways & Means before we headed back towards home.

ParticipantSince I had not been to Bluejacket this year, I decided to host a Happy Hour there so I could get my beerneuring point in style. It was super fun, so thanks to those that came out on a perfectly warm February evening!
My first beer was Forbidden Planet. After my 30-ish mile ride there, it was quite refreshing and slightly fruity. I am not sure it would have been as good had I not been sweaty and thirsty, but it was perfect.
I also had the “It’s Me, Not You”, which was a Pale Ale with delicious hints of grapefruit. I really wish they had named it “It’s You, Not Me”, though.
I had the Look Away next. It was a session IPA, and was kind of “meh”. My Untappd comment was literally “Not much to say”.
The last beer that I had was the Kid Charlemagne, which was another session IPA, but this one had a bit more flavour and came with an awesome guy in the background.
(Photos are clockwise starting in top left corner: Forbidden Planet, “It’s Me, Not You”, Kid Charlegmagne, and Look Away… Secstate had the same beer I had (Look Away), so I took a picture of him instead of my beer.)

ParticipantOn Saturday, I decided to give Team 15 a break and do a mountain bike ride instead of going for a long gravel ride. We had a blast playing in the woods and then decided to hit up Lake Ann Brew House in Reston before the storms hit.
The first beer I had was the Live-Work-Play IPA. This is a nicely balanced IPA that is both hoppy and refreshing. Especially on a 75F degree February afternoon!

The second beer I had was the Brown’s Chapel Brown Ale, which was okay, but I will probably not have it again. It had just a hint of malt to it, but was too light in flavour for my tastes.

ParticipantOut of order 6 and 7 from Sunday.

Port City Colossal 5 I like it better than the 6, which is also good and I had but I had it second so I had to not have it count here.
Beer from Hops at Potomac Yards. Meh. I asked for a beer that they made on site, and this is what I got. Generic mostly flavlourless beer that is agreeable to drinking large quantities of quickly.February 27, 2017 at 5:19 pm #1066975jwetzel
Participant8 and 9, in Baltimore where I went for the Bikemore Family Open House.

Nice picture but doesn’t count. The beer must be enjoyed where it was brewed. The rules are at the beginning of this thread.
