Do you like to bike? Do you like beer? If so, this side bet is for you. The rules are simple:

    1. Ride your bike to a brewery or brewpub. I estimate that there are over 50 breweries or brewpubs that can be reached by bike from DC, over 10 of them are in DC.
    2. Acquire a beer brewed at that location.
    3. Take a picture of the beer.
    4. Taste the beer.
    5. Post on this thread the picture of the beer, the location, and a comment about the beer. It can be anything from “tastes mostly like beer” to “the hop aroma contained grapefruit pith and apricot that was matched by a good malt backbone, which added a hint of graham cracker”.
    6. Whomever posts entries from the most number of breweries or brewpubs by the end of Freezing Saddles wins!
    7. The winner will receive a bottle of beer that reflects the nature of the competition. If only a few participate and the winner had 3 entries, then you will get a good bottle but nothing super special. If the competition is heated and the winner has 30 entries, then I will do my best to get something special.

    A few further clarifications:

    1. BE SAFE! No riding while under the influence. If you rode your bike to the brewery but find that you need to get a ride or take Metro home, the entry still counts.
    2. You can go to more than one brewery on a ride, but see above.
    3. The beer must be made at that location. Having a 3 Stars at the local bar does not count. Nothing at the Capital City in DC counts because it is all made in Shirlington.
    4. Some brewpubs have more than one location. A trip to each location counts.
    5. Keep in mind that this competition is to visit the most number of breweries and brewpubs. Once you visit and have a beer at a brewery or brewpub, then you cannot post another entry for that brewery or brewpub, even if you go back later and try a different beer.
    6. It is not required, but try to go on at least one brewery tour. Fun, educational and you usually get to sample beer.

The weather was amazing last night, so a few of us decided to ride down to Caboose and grab a beverage and some tasty fries (seriously, their fries are amazing).

I had my favourite of their brews, which is the Casey Jones Rye (I mean, it DOES have the best name!). As usual, the rye notes were spot on with the right amount of hop. It paired very well with the fries and stone mustard.

Met up with some people at Caboose last night. Had the Ghost Pepper Ale (along with a few others). Solid ale with a definite capsaicin bite to it.

I do not think that you can now buy beer at Aslin for consumption at the brewing. They ran into overcrowding and fire code problems. Only can get it to go. Don’t automatically discount the chains, they regularly win Great American Beer Festival awards. However, Rock Bottom in Ballston is gone.

Oh dear. Since they don’t seem to can or bottle (?) that means all sales are growlers or crowlers? That would be ineligible for beerneuring, so despite my above post, I may just defer going there till Spring. Still leaves plenty of others.

They are now also selling in cans and they are gorgeous:

If we drink it in the parking lot, will it count for beerneuring? 😎

Well, not sure how happy the Aslin folks would be with that.

I guess this one doesn’t count but I thought it was an appropriate beer for the happy hour. Because winter is coming…

Gremlin #1 and a Goodnight Apollo, a Russian Imperial Stout. It’s very Imperially. The RAR logo doesn’t show up well with the dark beer.

Last Dance Oatmeal Stout. The description says I should smell and taste the aroma of oatmeal. I do not want my morning oatmeal to smell like this. As a beer, though, it’s fine.

I managed 5 of these on Saturday night, whilst my brother and best friend drove between them. I’ll find time to post pictures and reviews tomorrow.

    Beerneuring #1

Despite my intention to only beerneur at breweries I have never been to before, I decided after the multiteam ride yesterday to pay a visit to New District. I decided to try a flight, because #drinklocal and #tickersaredestroyingcraftbeer and #sosueme

tried A, Infinite Beauty, a Berliner Weisse. Found it very good, it has that yeasty funkiness I associate with NDBC, as well as a moderate lemony tartness
    B. The Allies, an English Pale Ale – unfortunately it tasted oddly sour, which I suspect meant something wrong with the batch (or the lines?) I told the owner (who was serving -ain’t craft great?) He thanked me for my feedback, and offered something else which I passed on, as 4 tasters was enough for me.
    C. Spotswoods Expedition, which, aside from a name I love, was a very excellent black lager (schwartzbier? That is what I entered it as on Ratebeer), brewed with espresso beans. I could tell how strongly the beans were roasted. I liked that. (Can I get coffeecatting credit for this?)
    D. The Last Dance – an Oatmeal Stout- was kinda chocolate milky, with a piney, almost turpentiny thing going on (was that hops?) Didn’t like it as much as the Spotswoods
