Mile 21.8 – 3 Stars – Four tasters – Peppercorn Saison, Nectar of the Bogs (Cranberry Saison), Ghost (White IPA), Courting the Squall (Oatmeal Stout) – The only one of these beers I’ve had before is the Ghost which is a crisp, not very hoppy white IPA. My fav was Courting the Squall which seemed fitting for the day’s weather.

Continuing south we made our way to Right Proper Brookland. This is their production facility which has a nice, albeit small, tasting room. As Sunyata mentioned, they have some rad murals.

Mile 25.5 – Right Proper Brewing Company Brookland Production House + Tasting Room (RPBCBPH+TR for short) – HÄXAN (robust porter, 7.0% abv) – Clearly I have abandoned my “sessionable IPAs” plan at this point in favor of darker, more full-bodied beers. Plus this beer just sounds badass. Lots of coffee and chocolate coming through with this one.

Next stop, The Public Option. Last year during BAFS we were the only people in the place but this year it was packed. I was glad to see that since I think the owners and staff are pretty awesome and every beer I’ve tried has been very good.

Mile 26.4 – The Public Option – Sam’s Stout (6% abv) – Continuing down the dark, full-bodied beer path, this stout has a roasted maltiness with a nice creamy finish.

Atlas Brew Works would be the last stop of the day in DC. By now it’s pretty much dark out but the warming powers of alcohol are doing their job. They changed the setup of the tasting room since last year and you can no longer sip your beer next to tall stacks of empty cans on pallets. But they do have cool keg urinals in the men’s room and trivia on Tuesday night. Did you know OJ Simpson was originally cast to play the Terminator but the studio was afraid no one would buy him as a remorseless killer?

Mile 27.4 – Atlas Brew Works – Silent Neighbor Nitro (6.7% abv) – My second nitro of the day and also the second best (nitro). It was okay but not my favorite. Just didn’t have the characteristics I’ve come to expect from a nitro beer.

We would bookend the DC and Maryland breweries with two in Shirlington, first stop being Cap City and the last stop being New District. I want to like this place more but the most memorable thing about the beers I’ve had there is the price. How they charge a couple bucks more in a warehouse in Shirlington compared to similar breweries in DC is a head scratcher. They did allow us to bring our bikes inside so props to them for that.

Mile 39.5 – New District Brewing Company – Can’t recall and didn’t take a pic of the menu – Look, we were nine breweries in at this point so I can’t remember what I had. Deal with it.

As I mentioned previously, Sehkraft opened an hour later than listed so we had to take a pass during the Lucky 13 Brewvet. Since they are closing for good today ndubs and I paid a visit last night and were pleasantly surprised to find all beers priced at $2 and $3 each. All of their house brews were $2 and we were also drinking hard to find dank brews like the Hardywood Gingerbread Stout, Christmas Morning, and others for $3. Did we plan on drinking five high abv beers last night? No, no we didn’t. Did we drink five high abv beers last night? Yes, yes we did.

Sehkraft – Hoptastic IPA (7.2% abv) – Slightly sweet and tart with a decent amount of bitterness at the finish. A nice introduction to this local brewpub. Too bad they’re no more!

Rescuing this thread from falling to page 3… 50 degrees with a good chance of rain tonight but I was due for a few miles so a trip down the WOD to Caboose was the move…

Indeed it was spitting most of the way so ndubs and I were pretty saturated by the time we arrived. All that meant was we had to drink til we were mostly dry and the storm passed. No problem…

Caboose Brewing Co. – Vanilla Bean Hobo Stout > Golden Coast Golden Coffee Ale > Casey Jones Rye > Boxcar Brown Ale E: Loving Cup

I like Caboose. The stout was smooth, the coffee ale was okay – just a slight coffee note, always been a fan of the Casey Jones rye, and the Boxcar Brown was a great way to finish things off.

Yup. given the, ahem, abilities of some folks here, I have decided to not go for the “prize”. I will still participate in my own way though. I intend to focus only on breweries I have not already been to, and to exclude corporate chain brewpubs (GB, Rock Bottom, and the like) I do want to combine bikes and beer though, esp where there are breweries that are pretty bikeable. I have never been to Aslin, Ocelot, Lost Rhino, Forge, Fair Winds, Hellbinder, DC Brau, 3 Stars, Right Proper and a few others on my list, so there should be plenty of ground to cover.

I do not think that you can now buy beer at Aslin for consumption at the brewing. They ran into overcrowding and fire code problems. Only can get it to go. Don’t automatically discount the chains, they regularly win Great American Beer Festival awards. However, Rock Bottom in Ballston is gone.

Checked just their website and confirmed. Bummer. It doesn’t look like they have their “Animal Farmhouse” available right now which is my favorite.
