Do you like to bike? Do you like beer? If so, this side bet is for you. The rules are simple:

    1. Ride your bike to a brewery or brewpub. I estimate that there are over 50 breweries or brewpubs that can be reached by bike from DC, over 10 of them are in DC.
    2. Acquire a beer brewed at that location.
    3. Take a picture of the beer.
    4. Taste the beer.
    5. Post on this thread the picture of the beer, the location, and a comment about the beer. It can be anything from “tastes mostly like beer” to “the hop aroma contained grapefruit pith and apricot that was matched by a good malt backbone, which added a hint of graham cracker”.
    6. Whomever posts entries from the most number of breweries or brewpubs by the end of Freezing Saddles wins!
    7. The winner will receive a bottle of beer that reflects the nature of the competition. If only a few participate and the winner had 3 entries, then you will get a good bottle but nothing super special. If the competition is heated and the winner has 30 entries, then I will do my best to get something special.

    A few further clarifications:

    1. BE SAFE! No riding while under the influence. If you rode your bike to the brewery but find that you need to get a ride or take Metro home, the entry still counts.
    2. You can go to more than one brewery on a ride, but see above.
    3. The beer must be made at that location. Having a 3 Stars at the local bar does not count. Nothing at the Capital City in DC counts because it is all made in Shirlington.
    4. Some brewpubs have more than one location. A trip to each location counts.
    5. Keep in mind that this competition is to visit the most number of breweries and brewpubs. Once you visit and have a beer at a brewery or brewpub, then you cannot post another entry for that brewery or brewpub, even if you go back later and try a different beer.
    6. It is not required, but try to go on at least one brewery tour. Fun, educational and you usually get to sample beer.

The most most awesome beer. Chocolate Milk Stout from Old 690 Brewery, Purceville, VA. Had to ride down a dirt road to get to the brewery. Beer was rich, sweet and had chocolate flavor.

“Our dark and rich Chocolate Milk Stout is brewed with pure milk sugar and a lathering of sweet milk chocolate. While you’ll find hints of coffee notes in this one it finishes like the end of a glass of chocolate milk. “

I was planning on doing a 200k brevet on Saturday, but it was cancelled. Unfortunately, I did not know this until I had already driven to Poolesville. So, instead, I figured why not get a few more beerneuring points? 😎

I still wanted to get in some decent miles and I had been wanting to try and find a rideable route to Ocelot. So Dane and I went exploring.

After some interesting route adjustments, we made it!

The first beer I had was the Schizophrenia, an Altbier. It was good but in all honest was not worth the convoluted ride to get to it.

The second beer there was Thought Control. It was delightfully hoppy, with just a hint of citrus. Totally worth the ride to get there.

Saturday was also Crooked Run Central’s official grand opening. It was really crowded, with loud music, and a taco restaurant built in. WAY different from the original Crooked Run in Leesburg, which is one of my favourite breweries.

I had the Night Cap, which was a porter. It was good. Nice and malty, but kind of generic and not what I would have expected out of Crooked Run. I am hoping that once the “newness” wears off, it will become a bit more like the original Crooked Run (which, is still open, by the way… They are doing most of their “fun” brews at the old location).

The last stop was Beltway Brewing. I really wanted to try one of their contract brews, but I was not sure if that was allowed. The contract brews ARE brewed there, just under a different brewery name. To be on the safe side, I grabbed a Hansel, which is their signature sour. It is actually a really good “intro to sour beers” beer. A little pucker, but not overly sour/bitter.

I would have also had one of the contract beers, but the clouds were rolling in and I did not bring rain gear. We did end up getting rained on for the last three or four miles. But all in all, it was a good day!

Pictured is their pilsner, which was fine but I forget the name. I liked the Spotswood’s Expedition, a coffee black lager made with local coffee, better than the pilsner, but I didn’t like the photo as much.

FYI – I miscounted mine. I just updated the post titles, but my final total was 16, not 17.

Well, I still haven’t made it to the Heimatmuseum Dotzheim for the beer brewers exhibition in Wiesbaden, but a craft beer festival is coming to my neighborhood at the end of the month!

Congrats to Sunyata. Glad to have been around for some of those beers. I’m always too eager to drink the beer that I forget to take a picture.

For those curious about what this year’s beerneuring prize will be, I went to Richmond last weekend and came back with this deliciousness:
