Do you like to bike? Do you like beer? If so, this side bet is for you. I refuse to call this a pointless prize because: 1) there are points; and 2) there is nothing pointless about either riding a bike or drinking a beer.

The rules are simple:

1. Ride your bike to a brewery or brewpub. I estimate that there are over 50 breweries or brewpubs that can be reached by bike from DC, over 10 of them are in DC. Some of them have left us since last year (RIP Mad Fox), but there are also new ones (special shout out to Settle Down Easy, though biking their is a bit tricky).
2. Acquire a beer brewed at that location.
3. Take a picture of the beer.
4. Taste the beer.
5. Post on this thread the picture of the beer, the name of the beer, the location, and a comment about the beer. It can be anything from “tastes mostly like beer” to “the hop aroma contained grapefruit pith and apricot that was matched by a good malt backbone, which added a hint of graham cracker”. If any of these are missing from your post, you don’t get a point. Rules are rules.
6. Whomever posts entries from the most number of breweries or brewpubs by the end of Freezing Saddles wins!
7. You get an extra point if you number each of your posts.
8. Cider and mead count. Wine, distilled spirits, kombucha, or anything else not beer, cider or mead do not count.
9. The winner will receive a bottle of beer that reflects the nature of the competition. If only a few participate and the winner had 3 entries, then you will get a good bottle but nothing super special. If the competition is heated and the winner has 30 entries, then I will do my best to get something special.
10. New Rule – The winner or their proxy must be at the closing happy hour to receive their prize. Otherwise, I will drink your prize.

A few further clarifications:

1. BE SAFE! No riding while under the influence. If you rode your bike to the brewery but find that you need to get a ride or take Metro home, the entry still counts.
2. You can go to more than one brewery on a ride, but see above.
3. The beer must be made at that location. Having a 3 Stars at the local bar does not count.
4. Some brewpubs have more than one location. A trip to each location counts as long as the beer is made at that location.
5. Keep in mind that this competition is to visit the most number of breweries and brewpubs. Once you visit and have a beer at a brewery or brewpub, then you cannot post another entry for that brewery or brewpub, even if you go back later and try a different beer.
6. It is not required, but try to go on at least one brewery tour. Fun, educational and you usually get to sample beer.

Beerneuring #5 Port City Brewing

We know PCB. We love PCB. PCB just is. The bike lanes on Wheeler are – bike lanes. Despite the trucks. I will forgive them buying the parking lot across Wheeler if they push for a crosswalk.

But the fix it station. That, aside from the excellent bike parking, and their organized rides, and the plan for a CaBi station, is what shows they are bike friendly.

My story.

Maybe the tools are great. I went to deal with the air pump though. I currently own only one floor pump which I keep at work. Why bother with a floor pump at home when my building bike room has an electric pump? (don’t answer, that is part of the story) Even if its a schrader pump, I keep a supply of adapters. But. The pump is not working – again. And my tires were quite low.

No problem right? QOTM wanted to get crepes at Cafe Grains on Van Dorn (some of you may have seen the special on your FB feed). Well PCB is almost on the way, and I remembered the fixit station. So we agreed to meet at Van Dorn. I rode down to PCB. The air pump there didn’t work or I didn’t use it properly, and it didn’t really extend well – and not only did I drain my rear tire of all air, I bent the valve core (damn these presta valves are fragile). No bus there, no nearby bike shop. Shamed, I called my wife, to pick me up and drive me, with the rear wheel, to Conte’s. “Have a beer while you’re waiting for me” Which I did. (I also bought a portable pump from Conte’s while I was there)

Port City Baltic Porter

Very dark brown, tan head. Aroma is light roast malt, cocoa hints. Taste is roast malt, stronger cocoa. A bit of cola as it warms. Smooth, fairly light mouthfeel. Not bad, drinkable. No flaws, nothing too distinctive.

A little unplanned trip – test riding new bikes for Gremlin 2 at Bicycle Space, so we figured if we were THIS close…

Finally #BAFS2020 Beerneuring #1! I had plotted out four “breweries in downtown York, PA as a wrap up to riding the York County Heritage Rail Trail. When I hit the first, Old Forge Brewery, i was told they don’t brew on the premisi. I asked about the other three and she told me she thought it was the same. :( I asked if she knew of one who did brew on site, and she directeded me to Collusion about six blocks away.

I had the Fresh Pots! Creme Brulee Coffee Milk Stout, 5% ABV 25 IBU, Collusion Tap Works York, PA, Coffee Milk Stout brewed with chocolate, carafa, crystal and flaked oat malt & lactose. Yep sort of tasted like coffee.

Jan 30 at Port City. Got the Maniacal, a DIPA. Slightly sweet orangey start with a malty backbone. A short lived hoppy finish.

I really didn’t plan to do a beerneuring ride today, but after uploading my afternoon rides Strava told me I was still 1 km short of the January Cycling Distance goal (1750 km). So what’s a concientious cyclist to do I ask you?

Of course I suited up and got back on the bike riding to the closest place that brews beer, Audacious Aleworks in Fall Church City. In keeping with this year’s theme, I had their Carmel Macchiato Stout. Too sweet for my taste and it overwhelmed the coffee flavor, kinda like with a $tarbuck$ Carmel Macchiato.

Giganticus DIPA: DIPA-y. Perfectly pleasant, pretty strong.

Lord Juicy: oh look it’s a [expletive deleted] hazy IPA. What a novel concept. This one is actually kind of a failure at haziness, which turns out to be a good thing

Beerneuring #6, Chubby Squirrel

Sigh. I took the scenic route. Lake Barcroft to FFX cty Holmes Run Trail. I’ve kvetched before about wayfinding on FFX Cty trails. Interesting to see a few short stretches of trail beautifully paved. Of course gravel fans and some runners won’t like that, I guess. The Gallows crossing at Holmes Run Drive continues to be terrible. I forgot about it and followed the Google directions to it. Next time I’ll figure out a better crossing. The new underpass at Pickett in City of Fairfax made me happy.

Oh yeah, the brewery. Just another suburban shopping center storefront. No bike parking.

Chubby Squirrel Hefeweizen

slightly hazy yellow, thin white head. Aroma has strong banana kick. Taste does have some lemon, then smooth, clove banana typical hefe notes. A bit heavier creamier mouthfeel than I usually expect in a hefe. Not bad.

Feb 1 at Granite City. Got the Wicked, an unfiltered IPA. Not a fan. Too hoppy and a weird tangy finish. Not gonna finish this one.

Austrian Dreams Vienna Lager

Nice clear coppery amber off white head. Quite malty, bit of caramel, bit of hops..Fairly light, crisp. Not quite as good as big craft amber lagers. But ok.

Flanders Folly Saison

Clear gold shading to orange. White head. Peppery grassy aroma, not much funk. More barnyard on the taste, tart. Light mouthfeel. Somehow doesn’t come together right for me.

Pacific Waves IPA

Beautiful clear dark orange, gold. Pretty beer. Aroma is sharp pine, then citrus. Pretty similar taste. with malt apparent. Pretty decent classic west coast IPA, with lots of C hops.

Lord Vader’s Imperial Stout

Nearly black. Aroma is a little odd, more dark fruit than cocoa. Some dark chocolate. Think a dark chocolate bar with a fruit filling. Taste is more chocolate, a bit of coffee. Definitely sweet. Alcohol hidden behind the sweet chocolate flavor.

Feb 1 at Bluejacket. They were completely out of all their cask options (!) so I got the Distant Morning, yet another IPA. Bluejacket doesn’t disappoint and I finished this one. Unfiltered, tropical and hoppy.

Beerneuring #5 – Bike Lane Brewing, Reston on the W&OD. I had their Chamois Cream Ale (better than Little Kings or LaBatts) and got the brewing room tour.

You should have read my tasting note: Wicked juicy IPA: tastes like grapefruit juice. Would not recommend

Roggenbier: Never heard of this style before. It’s good. Tastes kind of Belgian-y
