Do you like to bike? Do you like beer? If so, this side bet is for you. I refuse to call this a pointless prize because: 1) there are points; and 2) there is nothing pointless about either riding a bike or drinking a beer.

The rules are simple:

1. Ride your bike to a brewery or brewpub. I estimate that there are over 50 breweries or brewpubs that can be reached by bike from DC, over 10 of them are in DC. Some of them have left us since last year (RIP Mad Fox), but there are also new ones (special shout out to Settle Down Easy, though biking their is a bit tricky).
2. Acquire a beer brewed at that location.
3. Take a picture of the beer.
4. Taste the beer.
5. Post on this thread the picture of the beer, the name of the beer, the location, and a comment about the beer. It can be anything from “tastes mostly like beer” to “the hop aroma contained grapefruit pith and apricot that was matched by a good malt backbone, which added a hint of graham cracker”. If any of these are missing from your post, you don’t get a point. Rules are rules.
6. Whomever posts entries from the most number of breweries or brewpubs by the end of Freezing Saddles wins!
7. You get an extra point if you number each of your posts.
8. Cider and mead count. Wine, distilled spirits, kombucha, or anything else not beer, cider or mead do not count.
9. The winner will receive a bottle of beer that reflects the nature of the competition. If only a few participate and the winner had 3 entries, then you will get a good bottle but nothing super special. If the competition is heated and the winner has 30 entries, then I will do my best to get something special.
10. New Rule – The winner or their proxy must be at the closing happy hour to receive their prize. Otherwise, I will drink your prize.

A few further clarifications:

1. BE SAFE! No riding while under the influence. If you rode your bike to the brewery but find that you need to get a ride or take Metro home, the entry still counts.
2. You can go to more than one brewery on a ride, but see above.
3. The beer must be made at that location. Having a 3 Stars at the local bar does not count.
4. Some brewpubs have more than one location. A trip to each location counts as long as the beer is made at that location.
5. Keep in mind that this competition is to visit the most number of breweries and brewpubs. Once you visit and have a beer at a brewery or brewpub, then you cannot post another entry for that brewery or brewpub, even if you go back later and try a different beer.
6. It is not required, but try to go on at least one brewery tour. Fun, educational and you usually get to sample beer.

4 – DC Brau, Washington DC

Penn Quarter Porter – Not too shabby, good rich flavor. $2.50 pours on Friday nights.
In Session IPA- Nice and light after too many porters at said $2.50. A little lower alcohol. I’m not usually an IPA fan, but this one doesn’t hit you in the head bitter.

5 – BlueJacket, Washington DC

The Mexican Radio – So good! Dark and rich, yet light and easy. Brewed with ancho chilis that give you a great tingle.
I also tried a cask brew, no good. Only naturally carbonated and served at 55 degrees. Tasted like a miller lite that’d been left on the counter open all afternoon. Not my bag.
Go with the Radio.

Perfect places: I get the mango but not the black pepper

Turning Road: good. Your mom is grassy and floral
Freak Scene: I’m getting grapefruit, which is NOT in the description

Jan 25 at Old Ox. Got the I am Brut, an IPA “brewed with natural flavors.” Dry and grassy. Quite refreshing.

Jan 25 at Lost Rhino. Opted for a dark beer this time, the Shooter McMunn’s, a dry Irish stout. Perfect for a dreary damp day and at 4% ABV will allow me to navigate through cartopia back to the WOD. Roasty and malty with a slightly bitter finish.

Jan 25 at Beltway Brewing. Got the Old Town Brown, a brown ale. A bit sweeter than I prefer but a nice malty chocolate bitter finish.

Jan 25 at the Sterling Crooked Run. Got the Bali, an American IPA brewed with rice milk. (!?!) Lots of tropical fruit ( pineapple and mango?) and a nice hoppy finish. I like this one!

Jan 25 at Rocket Frog. Got the Angry, Angry Alice because I like imperial IPAs and I was angry that it was way more damp than I had planned for when I left my house this morning. A little disappointed with Alice though…just not a lot going on with it other than the “let’s up the IBUs” trend which I thought we had finally passed. Oh well.

I find myself at Granite City Brewery made my way thru Alexandria and a quick chat with Matt H! I’m having a flight of all the beers brewed here and Brussel Sprout appetizer…56bb9665a658eaa43294428b62364eae.jpgfce7fcfc8b1ddcc127dff43e4a8560b2.jpg
I like the Zug Zwang because of its vanilla after taste and since it’s a dark beer makes me feel like a real beer drinker!

Brewery was totally empty when we got there. It was kind of nice.
Coat of Many Colors: pleasantly sour

Sunburst Finish: great nose. Fine beer
Ravaged by Wolves: just a delightful beer

Just want to mention that in 2018 when I won this contest I got to 28 breweries, while it’s now January 25 and you’ve been to 21. I think you’re my wife’s hero.

Zug Zwag vanilla porter: smells good. Tastes decent

Wicked juicy IPA: tastes like grapefruit juice. Would not recommend
The Duke pale ale: solid. Citrus.

This place was kind of dirty and the service was not great. They weren’t busy, they just seemed not to be doing much. And they were out of more than half their beers. And the ride there is not all that awesome.

This was at National Harbor right! I liked that Zug Zwag too!

Yeah, my first time at National Harbor. Kind of like The Wharf, but with less soul and walkability, which is quite a feat.
