Do you like to bike? Do you like beer? If so, this side bet is for you. I refuse to call this a pointless prize because: 1) there are points; and 2) there is nothing pointless about either riding a bike or drinking a beer.

The rules are simple:

1. Ride your bike to a brewery or brewpub. I estimate that there are over 50 breweries or brewpubs that can be reached by bike from DC, over 10 of them are in DC. Some of them have left us since last year (RIP Mad Fox), but there are also new ones (special shout out to Settle Down Easy, though biking their is a bit tricky).
2. Acquire a beer brewed at that location.
3. Take a picture of the beer.
4. Taste the beer.
5. Post on this thread the picture of the beer, the name of the beer, the location, and a comment about the beer. It can be anything from “tastes mostly like beer” to “the hop aroma contained grapefruit pith and apricot that was matched by a good malt backbone, which added a hint of graham cracker”. If any of these are missing from your post, you don’t get a point. Rules are rules.
6. Whomever posts entries from the most number of breweries or brewpubs by the end of Freezing Saddles wins!
7. You get an extra point if you number each of your posts.
8. Cider and mead count. Wine, distilled spirits, kombucha, or anything else not beer, cider or mead do not count.
9. The winner will receive a bottle of beer that reflects the nature of the competition. If only a few participate and the winner had 3 entries, then you will get a good bottle but nothing super special. If the competition is heated and the winner has 30 entries, then I will do my best to get something special.
10. New Rule – The winner or their proxy must be at the closing happy hour to receive their prize. Otherwise, I will drink your prize.

A few further clarifications:

1. BE SAFE! No riding while under the influence. If you rode your bike to the brewery but find that you need to get a ride or take Metro home, the entry still counts.
2. You can go to more than one brewery on a ride, but see above.
3. The beer must be made at that location. Having a 3 Stars at the local bar does not count.
4. Some brewpubs have more than one location. A trip to each location counts as long as the beer is made at that location.
5. Keep in mind that this competition is to visit the most number of breweries and brewpubs. Once you visit and have a beer at a brewery or brewpub, then you cannot post another entry for that brewery or brewpub, even if you go back later and try a different beer.
6. It is not required, but try to go on at least one brewery tour. Fun, educational and you usually get to sample beer.

Sorry, doesn’t count because my understanding is that the beer is not brewed at that location.

Jan 17 with the Lumbasterjacks at New District Brewing. I got the Field Experiment, an IPA. Hadn’t had this one before, and it was decent. Looks like a New England style, but tasted more West Coast. Not too much piney but a strong orangy-grapefruity citrus profile.

Well I’ll be damned. My apologies. I updated that post as “non-beerneuring” as well as the number on my subsequent post.

Yes Mead counts towards beerneuring
Sunday 1/19/2020 noon-3:30 freezing saddles happy hour during my shift At Maryland Meadworks. ride to the meadworks and show your helmets to get half off ur first glass of mead. You can even stash ur bikes inside the taproom during that time and I’ll snap a picture of you with your mead on your smartphone for FS documentation purposes. And there are many other places on route 1 to pub crawl to before or after — streetcar 82, sangfroid distillery, pizzeria Paradiso, Franklin’s brewpub, denizens, etc.

#5 Old Ox Brewery, Ashburn, VA

War Wagon Amber Lager

Hit the spot after a less than pleasant ride in pretty crummy weather. The second one convinced me to pass up a car ride home and brave the elements once more. Bad decision.

Chesapeake Brewing Company in Annapolis MD
Hazy Gray and Underway: Yay nautical theme. Another [expletive deleted] hazy. Why do I keep ordering these?

Waterman’s Soul IPA: Not hazy. Fine. I like beerneuring with the wife because I get to try all her beers
Chuck Brown (Crooked Crab Brewing Co, not brewed here): Pleasantly brown and malty

This is an underrated spot. Decent beer, decent food, good location. Wasn’t even ruined by the fact that our server went to my rival high school

Internet connection is spotty so pictures later

Jan 19 at Third Street Brewing in Farmville. I had their Drive By Juice, a DIPA. Smells West Coast but tastes more like a NE style with lots of tropical flavors…peach and papaya? All their beers and sodas are brewed here. Pretty cool place and is right on the High Bridge trail.

Bike Lane Brewery – I cant believe it’s taken me this long to get to this place! It’s a bike shop, it’s a brewery, it’s a coffee shop, what else do you need? I had the Hellwig IPA, another citrusy IPA. 188cb7dfb46f8341359e3ded362226b4.jpg019ff56f60bb2f3d577c5761a359a7d6.jpg

Happy to see another non-IPA or exotic brew at this comfortable spot. This is very easy to drink and pairs well with the tacos served by El Tio. a805e7482898e6aa7061b8aa2310f230.jpg

Beerneuring #4 Aslin Alexandria

Been there once before, but not for FS.

This place gave a purpose to the new bike lanes on Pickett west of Van Dorn. They are door zone bike lanes, but the parking is taken up by trucks that don’t seem to move on weekends or holidays, that I can see. The ride to there, through Ben Brenman Park, Cameron Station, and the Pickett bike lanes, is pleasant enough.

The brewery is large, high ceilinged and decorated with abstract art. It would be nice if there were some actual
bike parking.

Aslin Grovestand (Milkshake IPA

Very hazy orange, looks like fresh squeezed OJ. Light white head. Aroma is all citrus – mostly orange, but I think I get a little grapefruit, tangerine. Taste is largely orange at first with some hop bitterness (but not much) then the lactose appears. I’m not quite getting creamsicle, more like some orange soda concoction. Definitely on the smooth creamy side. Goes down quite easy.

Pumpkin Ale – not a hint of haze. Not my favorite pumpkin Ale ever, but a nice change of pace

Zappa IPA – New England-y. Blah
Juicy Mosaic burst- yup
Oatmeal Stout (nitro) – very nutty

Beerneuring #4: Beltway Brewing

Made it to Beltway Brewing. Got a flight consisting of HOV a blonde ale, Honey ale, and Haut Cross Bun a milk stout. Liked the HOV which was quite fragrant and the Haut Cross Bun which was a bit sweet. Also got a 15% rider discount which made it even sweeter!
