Do you like to bike? Do you like beer? If so, this side bet is for you. I refuse to call this a pointless prize because: 1) there are points; and 2) there is nothing pointless about either riding a bike or drinking a beer.

The rules are simple:

1. Ride your bike to a brewery or brewpub. I estimate that there are over 50 breweries or brewpubs that can be reached by bike from DC, over 10 of them are in DC. Some of them have left us since last year (RIP Mad Fox), but there are also new ones (special shout out to Settle Down Easy, though biking their is a bit tricky).
2. Acquire a beer brewed at that location.
3. Take a picture of the beer.
4. Taste the beer.
5. Post on this thread the picture of the beer, the name of the beer, the location, and a comment about the beer. It can be anything from “tastes mostly like beer” to “the hop aroma contained grapefruit pith and apricot that was matched by a good malt backbone, which added a hint of graham cracker”. If any of these are missing from your post, you don’t get a point. Rules are rules.
6. Whomever posts entries from the most number of breweries or brewpubs by the end of Freezing Saddles wins!
7. You get an extra point if you number each of your posts.
8. Cider and mead count. Wine, distilled spirits, kombucha, or anything else not beer, cider or mead do not count.
9. The winner will receive a bottle of beer that reflects the nature of the competition. If only a few participate and the winner had 3 entries, then you will get a good bottle but nothing super special. If the competition is heated and the winner has 30 entries, then I will do my best to get something special.
10. New Rule – The winner or their proxy must be at the closing happy hour to receive their prize. Otherwise, I will drink your prize.

A few further clarifications:

1. BE SAFE! No riding while under the influence. If you rode your bike to the brewery but find that you need to get a ride or take Metro home, the entry still counts.
2. You can go to more than one brewery on a ride, but see above.
3. The beer must be made at that location. Having a 3 Stars at the local bar does not count.
4. Some brewpubs have more than one location. A trip to each location counts as long as the beer is made at that location.
5. Keep in mind that this competition is to visit the most number of breweries and brewpubs. Once you visit and have a beer at a brewery or brewpub, then you cannot post another entry for that brewery or brewpub, even if you go back later and try a different beer.
6. It is not required, but try to go on at least one brewery tour. Fun, educational and you usually get to sample beer.

Any requirement on the size of the beer? Would a 4oz pour still count? Or does it have to be 12-16oz?

Beernuering #3: Ornery Brewery

I had the Snow Misner, the only brew that was brewed on sight. Half-pours are *very* big! It was full of holiday spice. Even better, some fellow cyclists bought us our round!

Beernuering #4: Chubby Squirrel Draft

I had the Dirty Snowball, a New England IPA. It was crisp & fresh. AND they have fried with poutine (which they will serve without the gravy!)

Jan 11 at Ornery Beer Company in Fairfax. I resigned to get the Snow Mizer, the only beer brewed on site, which is a spiced ale. I’m generally not a fan of spiced ales so I got a 1/2 pour which came in a full size glass with a generous pour. I was pleasantly suprised as I got the lingering “warming” in the aftertaste. I would have liked this much more were it not so clove heavy. Other than that, the vanilla balanced out the spices pretty well. I could see enjoying this one sipping itby the fire. On a 70 degree day though, not so much. Fortunately, I had the foresight to order their Pacific Waves, a west coast style IPA to enjoy, but it doesn’t count since it’s not brewed on sight. Damn you, Claeys, and your rules!

Jan 11 at Chubby Squirrel in Fairfax. I got the Dirty Snowball, a New England style IPA. (ICWYD there, CS!) It was fine and I happily quaffed it before our return journey, but I don’t recall anything special about it. Their description says it’s brewed with vanilla oat milk and mild sugar. I’m sure it was somewhere in there, but I didn’t notice it. Best part was drinking it outside with friends!

The ride there was lovely. Strava informed me that I had not ridden to Leesburg since 2016, which surprised me, but also made sense, between non bike stuff, bike advocacy, exploring in DC and Md, I can see where that would be true. I managed around the detour well enough. The brewery is almost right off the trail, Could have used better bike parking. I got a flight – I had thought of stopping at a second brewery in Leesburg, but because I started a bit late, and faced a south wind on the return, I decided not to. The BWB taproom is quite cozy.

Irish Setter Red Ale

Pours dark brown, tan head. Aroma is nice caramel. Taste is sweetish, malty, caramel, dark bread. Nice

Belgian Trippel

Pours light gold, lasting white head. Slightly yeasty funky aroma. Much more funk on the taste. Alcohol is a bit too obvious. Fairly heavy mouthfeel
A bit harsh on the finish, something like licorice. I think this is not their best

Yellow Lab IPA

Almost hazy orange, small but lasting white head. Aroma is beautiful evergreen trees, shading into flowers. Taste is much more citrus, grapefruit, lemon, pine on the finish. Fairly light mouthfeel. Not at all bad.

Black Lab Porter

Pours almost black, tan head. Aroma is soft malt, almost minty, more than chocolate. Taste is very roasty, more hoppy than a lot of micro porters, hints of milk chocolate on the finish. Medium light mouthfeel. Not typical, again not bad.

Jan 12 at Crooked Run in Leesburg. I got the Raspberry Empress, a sour IPA. Slightly sour, a hint of raspberry and a robust grapefruit finish. An excellent beer on a warm January afternoon!

January 12 at Wild Hare Hard Cider. I got the Hopscotched, a dry cider with hops. Light and refreshing with a hoppy finish.

Jan 12 at Black Hoof Brewing in Leesburg. I got the Off Road, a radler (!) So not my style a beer but, damn, it was really refreshing with lots of citrusy notes.

Jan 12 at Black Walnut Brewery in Leesburg. Got the Pitbull, an American IPA. A little resinous pine and grapefruit on the finish. Yet another lovely beer to enjoy on a lazy sunny afternoon.

Did you actually watch (“on sight [emoji872] “) them brew the Snow Misner? Asking for a friend…

Been meaning to check out this place for a while. Much more airy than the location in Herndon. The bartender said they Brew everything here. Got the Double Orange Starfish (a Double IPA) and Gose with Blackberries and Raspberries. They were both refreshing and with the warm weather it felt like summer!8367b963d89798a7f53a9157a402d929.jpg23507dc4046fcd458f557bdaa4184208.jpg

They only make sours on-site here. I had the Cuvee. It was not nearly as sour as the wife insists it was.

I washed it down with a Heart and Soul IPA, not brewed on site, I’m kind of tired of hazy, juicy IPAs. It was a nice fad for a month or two but it’s time to move on.

I had the West something IPA. It wasn’t hazy at all. It was delicious.

Then i had a Nebulous, which was hazy. So hazy. Then a bunch of large branches nearly fell on us so we went inside. A stick hit me in the cheek.

I had the Yellow Lab IPA. No haze. Solid.

I was late getting here because Gremlin 2 insisted we get some extra miles so we did a 4 mile out and back on the W&OD. We saw 8 deer hanging out along the trail.
