Do you like to bike? Do you like beer? If so, this side bet is for you. I refuse to call this a pointless prize because: 1) there are points; and 2) there is nothing pointless about either riding a bike or drinking a beer.

    The rules are simple:

    1. Ride your bike to a brewery or brewpub. I estimate that there are over 50 breweries or brewpubs that can be reached by bike from DC, over 10 of them are in DC. Some of them have left us since last year (RIP Mad Fox), but there are also new ones (special shout out to Settle Down Easy, though biking their is a bit tricky).
    2. Acquire a beer brewed at that location.
    3. Take a picture of the beer.
    4. Taste the beer.
    5. Post on this thread the picture of the beer, the name of the beer, the location, and a comment about the beer. It can be anything from “tastes mostly like beer” to “the hop aroma contained grapefruit pith and apricot that was matched by a good malt backbone, which added a hint of graham cracker”. If any of these are missing from your post, you don’t get a point. Rules are rules.
    6. Whomever posts entries from the most number of breweries or brewpubs by the end of Freezing Saddles wins!
    7. You get an extra point if you number each of your posts.
    8. Cider and mead count. Wine, distilled spirits, kombucha, or anything else not beer, cider or mead do not count.
    9. The winner will receive a bottle of beer that reflects the nature of the competition. If only a few participate and the winner had 3 entries, then you will get a good bottle but nothing super special. If the competition is heated and the winner has 30 entries, then I will do my best to get something special.
    10. New Rule – The winner or their proxy must be at the closing happy hour to receive their prize. Otherwise, I will drink your prize.

    A few further clarifications:

    1. BE SAFE! No riding while under the influence. If you rode your bike to the brewery but find that you need to get a ride or take Metro home, the entry still counts.
    2. You can go to more than one brewery on a ride, but see above.
    3. The beer must be made at that location. Having a 3 Stars at the local bar does not count.
    4. Some brewpubs have more than one location. A trip to each location counts as long as the beer is made at that location.
    5. Keep in mind that this competition is to visit the most number of breweries and brewpubs. Once you visit and have a beer at a brewery or brewpub, then you cannot post another entry for that brewery or brewpub, even if you go back later and try a different beer.
    6. It is not required, but try to go on at least one brewery tour. Fun, educational and you usually get to sample beer.

Jan 6 at Heritage Brewing in Arlington. I had one of their flagship beers, Live Free or Die, a west coast style IPA. Easy drinking, pleasant citrus and piney notes.

Did you make sure that they brewed it there, rather than at their main brewing facility?

Yes I did. In fact, I didn’t get the beer I really wanted because it wasn’t brewed on site.

Did a ride to Vanish Brewery North of Leesburg on Xmas Eve. It was a (mostly) asphalt ride but good options for gravel or road ride. Would be happy to lead a ride there sometime over the next few months, if anyone is interested. We started from Vienna but could equally have people join in Leesburg.

I had their signature “dairy wars” nitro milk stout, which is brewed in the sweet English style and has an ABV of 5.4% It’s supposed to have hints of chocolate and coffee, but I could not get past the sourness, which was way over the top for me. It’s not yet rated on beeradvocate.com, but I think they might’ve lost the war with this one.

(Note: the bartender said that it was brewed on site)

    Ordered the flight:
The Colonel: A smooth and crips Pilsner named for the owner’s father-in-law. If ordered, it comes with much boasting from said father-in-law and eye rolling from owner.
Old Man Winter: Comes with a rosemary sprig! Smooth and complex, great aroma.
Scoth’d Pumpkin: Cinnamon and brown sugar rim! A little malty, not overwhelmingly pumpkin
Livn’ the Hy-Life: Very smooth and rich. Collaboration with Vigilante Coffee

Also tasted the MISC, aged in rye whiskey barrels. Really good!

You can customize your own flights as they sell them by individual tasters, so I order all of their available “Darker than Light” series.

    1. Black Forest Imperial Stout: The coffee, chocolate and sweet cherry notes all came through nicely. It would be easy to drink too many of these and have the ABV of 12.4% hit you like a sledgehammer before you knew what happen. As they say: be careful in the Forest!

    2. Clan Macleod Immortal Scottish Ale: this was perhaps my favorite as they did an extraordinary job brewing this from 6 different grains in the “wee heavy” style. It would’ve been easy to screw up this brew with that many ingredients. But luckily they didn’t!

    3. Westminster Bridge Extra Special Bitter: this wound up being my chaser… a dark amber “bitter” that was not bitter at all. Nice notes of nuts and malt.

I enjoyed all three brews, and would repeat them again.

Jan 10 at Settle Down Easy. I like this place and it’s really close to my house! I got Val’s Imperial Sting, a chile pepper honey ale. I’ve been looking forward to it since I really like their Scoville Sting and Val is its big sister. Lots of honey malty notes to balance the pepper. Liked this a lot and bought some more to take home.

I got the National Landing – a citrusy, slightly hazy IPA. I think one of my favorite beers they’ve done!

Le Gran Chocolat Imperial Milk Stout
An English-style, Barrel-aged, dark beer with high chocolate notes, creamy and very smooth. Hints of whiskey and oak from the barrel aging, but not overwhelming. I think this should also qualify for #FS2020chocolateuring !!
(Note: doubleheader w/ El Tío tacos [emoji895] served on site;-)

Very warm and windy today! But the beer was still cold. Got the Integral[emoji2398] IPA. Not as cloudy as a New England IPA, drinkable. 5f08f8ccf5afe73d3a6a7b1306dc3f38.jpg
