Do you like to bike? Do you like beer? If so, this side bet is for you. I refuse to call this a pointless prize because: 1) there are points; and 2) there is nothing pointless about either riding a bike or drinking a beer.

    The rules are simple:

    1. Ride your bike to a brewery or brewpub. I estimate that there are over 50 breweries or brewpubs that can be reached by bike from DC, over 10 of them are in DC. Some of them have left us since last year (RIP Mad Fox), but there are also new ones (special shout out to Settle Down Easy, though biking their is a bit tricky).
    2. Acquire a beer brewed at that location.
    3. Take a picture of the beer.
    4. Taste the beer.
    5. Post on this thread the picture of the beer, the name of the beer, the location, and a comment about the beer. It can be anything from “tastes mostly like beer” to “the hop aroma contained grapefruit pith and apricot that was matched by a good malt backbone, which added a hint of graham cracker”. If any of these are missing from your post, you don’t get a point. Rules are rules.
    6. Whomever posts entries from the most number of breweries or brewpubs by the end of Freezing Saddles wins!
    7. You get an extra point if you number each of your posts.
    8. Cider and mead count. Wine, distilled spirits, kombucha, or anything else not beer, cider or mead do not count.
    9. The winner will receive a bottle of beer that reflects the nature of the competition. If only a few participate and the winner had 3 entries, then you will get a good bottle but nothing super special. If the competition is heated and the winner has 30 entries, then I will do my best to get something special.
    10. New Rule – The winner or their proxy must be at the closing happy hour to receive their prize. Otherwise, I will drink your prize.

    A few further clarifications:

    1. BE SAFE! No riding while under the influence. If you rode your bike to the brewery but find that you need to get a ride or take Metro home, the entry still counts.
    2. You can go to more than one brewery on a ride, but see above.
    3. The beer must be made at that location. Having a 3 Stars at the local bar does not count.
    4. Some brewpubs have more than one location. A trip to each location counts as long as the beer is made at that location.
    5. Keep in mind that this competition is to visit the most number of breweries and brewpubs. Once you visit and have a beer at a brewery or brewpub, then you cannot post another entry for that brewery or brewpub, even if you go back later and try a different beer.
    6. It is not required, but try to go on at least one brewery tour. Fun, educational and you usually get to sample beer.

    #BAFS2020beerneuring – #1

I had the Lowest Lord ESB at Denizens Brewing Company in Riverdale Park. The Lowest Lord is my favorite from Denizens. I like ESBs, and I like this more hop-forward ESB.4ef103c9af07743fef2f431dc1397bd6.jpg

    #FS2020Beerneuring 007 – Caboose Tavern
I had the Dutchess Coffee Porter which was heavy bodied & robust as advertised, but not overwhelming so. Definitely tasted the, balanced notes coffee & chocolate
5.5% ABV / IBU 24. My #beerneuringbuddy Carl had the Barel Aged Hobo Stout
limited release, aged 2 months in bourbon barrels, which definitely came through first on the notes, followed by roasted coffee and molasses. An acquired taste, but smooth. 8.0% ABV / IBU 24

Suffragette Stout (chocolate cherry stout): more of an essence than a flavor of cherries, but very nice

    Beerneuring #10. Public Option.

This was like the best beerneuring experience ever. Justifies this whole friggin freezing saddles.

So. Beautiful day. I ride to Public Option, up the nicely improved MBT, and finally found the right way to Franklin Street.

But Lord of the Stupid had forgotten to check the hours. Friday and Saturday only. Oh well, I can ride somewhere else.

Then a couple walk up and unlock the door. “You’re closed, right?” “You rode here, come on in. Take your bike in”.

They gave me a free beer. (They can’t charge when they’re closed ? But still, they didn’t have to do that, but they insisted) They are riders, WABA members, we talked bikes, freezing saddles, and the brewery business.

    We. Should. All. Go. There.

    Public Option Cream Ale.

Nice grassy hop aroma. I was too absorbed in conversation to really pay attention to the taste, but suffice it that it was balanced and pleasant.

Feb 23 at Adroit Theory. Definitely one of my favorite breweries for stouts. I showed remarkable restraint in not ordering one of their high ABV stouts and got the Demogorgon, a sour made from a blend of 2 beers. Not sure what the 2 beers were though. I’m not usually a fan of sours but I liked this one. I’m guessing the stout they blended in tempered the sourness and brought some sweetness in.

Feb 23 at Belly Love. I got the Eye of Jupiter, an oatmeal stout. Lots of coffee on the nose, and chocolate on the palate. I really like this one a lot because it’s not too sweet like a lot of oatmeal stouts. I like the bitter finish too.

#FS2020 Beerneuring #11, finally a New York City brewery (they mostly open later than I want to be out riding during the week). After riding the hell Gate Pathway across Randall’s Island, I crossed the Bronx Kill and stopped at The Bronx Brewery on 138th St for the American Pale Ale, very tasty. Their on tap draft selection was heavily weighted with IPA variations. There were no active brewery tours while I was there.

Mar 7 a Red Bear Brewing. It was the 1st anniversary and since we got there early and got some swag too. I got the Fifty First State, a New England IPA. Yeasty, floral and hoppy with a nice creamy-ness. My favorite beer of the day.
