Do you like to bike? Do you like beer? If so, this side bet is for you. The rules are simple:

    1. Ride your bike to a brewery or brewpub. I estimate that there are over 50 breweries or brewpubs that can be reached by bike from DC, over 10 of them are in DC.
    2. Acquire a beer brewed at that location.
    3. Take a picture of the beer.
    4. Taste the beer.
    5. Post on this thread the picture of the beer, the location, and a comment about the beer. It can be anything from “tastes mostly like beer” to “the hop aroma contained grapefruit pith and apricot that was matched by a good malt backbone, which added a hint of graham cracker”.
    6. Whomever posts entries from the most number of breweries or brewpubs by the end of Freezing Saddles wins!
    7. The winner will receive a bottle of beer that reflects the nature of the competition. If only a few participate and the winner had 3 entries, then you will get a good bottle but nothing super special. If the competition is heated and the winner has 30 entries, then I will do my best to get something special.

    A few further clarifications:

    1. BE SAFE! No riding while under the influence. If you rode your bike to the brewery but find that you need to get a ride or take Metro home, the entry still counts.
    2. You can go to more than one brewery on a ride, but see above.
    3. The beer must be made at that location. Having a 3 Stars at the local bar does not count. Nothing at the Capital City in DC counts because the beer is made somewhere else (and RIP Cap City Shirlington).
    4. Some brewpubs have more than one location. A trip to each location counts.
    5. Keep in mind that this competition is to visit the most number of breweries and brewpubs. Once you visit and have a beer at a brewery or brewpub, then you cannot post another entry for that brewery or brewpub, even if you go back later and try a different beer.
    6. It is not required, but try to go on at least one brewery tour. Fun, educational and you usually get to sample beer.

I stopped by Right Proper’s other location in Shaw and had their Wild Wolves. Right Proper’s beer is consistently good, and this one didn’t disappoint.

Stopped by ChopHouse on my way home last night. Clearly, I don’t follow sports, or I would have realized they would be full of Capitals fans! Learned they were the oldest brewery in the district & met the bartender who’s been with them since day 1. Tried the IPA – it was an IPA.

Stopped by Right Proper Brewery in Shaw. Apparently they brew everything at the Shaw location except the Haxan. Decided to go with a road theme and got the lookaftering (a biere de garde), zebra crossing (a belgian wheat), and motorik (a sour). Liked the Motorik which was nice and tart.36220b0543c8131ff40e3068f68168d5.jpg7b1448570ac930f1e11f836a5b712e20.jpg

So – did some sleuthing… the beer was Bravo. It was strong. Reji was impressed I drank it after a 50mile Ride. It was delicious. It inspired Reji to buy a 4-pack to bring home.

I subcummed to peer pressure (see pic) and had a Razor Burn Mexican Hot Chocolate Stout…a sweet stout spiced with Ancho y Guajillo chilles…ave Maria!..Ecuadorian cocoa nibs, vanilla and cinnamon. Hijole!

The combination of the chilles & chocolate make this one of the more unique stouts that I have tasted, and worthy of a repeat performance.

Joined up with Team X – Snow Patrol at Port City. Always wanted to go there so it was a good excuse to ride down to that part of town. Tried a few of the new releases and liked the Golden Export lager. The Rauch marzen was interesting too for the smokey flavor. Finished with a Monumental IPA to commemorate this monumental occasion.c65615b868dec7d802b48ef425bb2d5c.jpgad950ac6ac76e8673d27eb1fe13bf89e.jpg

Once given in, I decided to embrace peer pressure and rode across the Little City to sample AA’s February offering: Clan MacLeod Scottish Ale, which was, well, very scottish! It also happened to be free hotdog hour, so I ordered a No. 5 Cajun Andouille sausage, which I never tasted because @CBGanimal ate it!:-0767c7a8c79583d9c9f6ecb2a8f89240e.jpg3a4e268a0e139791d6f0abe74570c157.jpge21017b79cf656fb46a9d25cf4530b41.jpg47d4e6f1e170f22ab1327a9df094950f.jpg

#BAFS2019beerneuring 08: Settle Down Easy (Falls Church VA)

This was our 4th stop of the day, by which time my palate was getting bombarded by brews and spirits, plus Pico de Gallo on tacos and nacho cheese.

Nonetheless, I enjoyed the Le Grand Chocolate, 7.8% ABV, 15 IBU (a stout beer) because I am a sucker for just about anything chocolate.

SDE is in the former Bonsai bike shop location, and still has the Shimano sticker on the entrance door.0badae2d117f8a46095173cd01bc3d3f.jpg936353f329d5eb1858f20e6c7b7ac159.jpgb633efa1980fbbf6ffa02a8f2e24def1.jpg

#BAFS2019beerneuring 09: Caboose Commons (Mosaic District, Merrifield VA)

At this point of the beerneuring ride, it had whittled down from 10 contestants to the final 3: @smb9600, @SteveO and myself. I tried the Boxcar Brown Ale (5% ABV) because it was a Gold Medal VA Craft Brewers Cup winner in 2016, and well, “hints of rich chocolate.”

The proliferation of micro-breweries and distilleries in Falls Church is truly amazing. When I first move here in the early 90s there were none. Today I visited 5 within a 3 mile radius of my home. And there are 3 more to score if I extend my radius out to 5 miles. But that will have to wait for another day.0490fead7615071d946d3f7ef2ebe19f.jpgfe63e056e25ae04af7dddb47e70c5a1b.jpgfe2a8b8baaa70705fed7d52d56e5f748.jpg

1/26 at Mad Fox, the first of several stops on SMB9600’s Falls Church beer ride. I had the Razor Burn Mexican Hot Chocolate Stout, a mighty fine stout! It is brewed with a bunch of stuff including guajillo peppers which I love. Sweet vanilla on the nose, roasty chocolate on palate and a pleasant cinnamony warmth from the peppers.

1/26 at Audacious Aleworks. I had the Westminster Bridge ESB. I recently proclaimed that I needed more ESBs in my life, just not this one. Syrupy, sweet and not enough bitter. The venue was cool though, and they offered free popcorn and hotdogs.

Lovely tandem ride on th W&OD. Stopped at Caboose and had a couple tasty beverages to go with my brussle sprouts. Tried Swartzbier, a black Lager I’ve not seen on the menus before, and Dutchess Porter, a coffee porter that’s been my fav for a while. Both good, but still prefer Dutchess. 😊👍🍺

Just noticed I’m spilling my beer in this photo. Must have had too many. Do images have to be landscape format in this forum, or is there a way to rotate images I haven’t found.
