I also stopped by Streetcar 82, which in addition to the Maryland Meadworks, is one of the newest breweries in the Hyattsville area. In addition to opening the first deaf-owned brewery on the east coast and serving good beer, the three owners, Mark, Jon, and Sam have fostered a great community space.

I recently started taking an ASL class they’re offering. While learning languages has never been my strong suit, I’m grateful for the opportunity to learn.

I had the Pooh Bear, a biere de garde, which was good. They’re still working to identify their flagships, and I really liked a previous biere de garde they served, the Roundhouse.

    Port city stop today! 0e1e4fd58747e0d2d2a95ef81cc9dd71.jpg

Had the Rauch Marzen; a lager style beer with some Smokey notes. Tasted like bbq and a campfire. Would recommend!!

Definitely – lots of stops in the area (Streetcar 82 is a couple of blocks away, and Franklin’s a few more) – plus pastries at Shortcake. Something for everyone!

I didn’t know it was Rumi’s establishment. That’s cool. She posted a picture of a Maryland Meadworks jersey on Twitter recently that was really cool. It had a bee with the Maryland flag incorporated.

Methinks a group beerneuring event to support Rumi’s business is in order.

It would make a fun group event!

    Beerneuring #1 Port City Brewing

    Colossal Four

Abbey style quad. Aroma was caramel and dark fruit, brightly malty hints of yeast. A bit of raisin. Taste has more funk and then a rush of caramel sweetness. Raisins and plums weaving in and out. Altogether very nice.

Ride notes: While my goal is to beerneur at new places, another goal of mine is to catch up on the beers from PCB that I haven’t tried yet. I made this visit after a ride around the George Mason memorial East (?) Taylor Run area. Colvin is an interesting little industrial street so close to Old Town, and then there is the hidden non street street right near Rockland’s that leads to the City vehicle mtnce depot. Of course I’ve been on Wheeler many times, but for some reason never noticed the historic mill before. On the way back explored Clover College Park, ground zero for Alexandria traffic kvetching, then rode up Seminary (taking the lane even scarier into a headwind) and made a point of enjoying the bike only slip lane at Braddock and Van Dorn. No, I am not sure why there is a bollard there – either fear of cyclists running down peds at that crosswalk, or, more interestingly, that drivers, never having seen a bike slip lane before, will think its a regular slip lane.

The weather was gorgeous, and I didn’t want to miss the 100 mile minimum the first week. So, I ventured over to Silver Spring to check out Astro Lab Brewing and Denizens.

It’s pretty easy to get to Silver Spring from Hyattsville. The closure of the ATT near the West Hyattsville Metro Station and poor signage (unless I missed a bunch after the initial detour sign) got things off to a circuitous route.

This was my first visit to Astro Lab Brewing, which opened in October. They have a bunch of IPAs and double-dry hopped beers. I had the SPF 100 pale ale, which was great.

I spread the word about Freezing Saddles to a couple of cyclists, who I thought may be playing based on the Bar Mitts.

I’m excited Denizens is opening a second location in Riverdale Park in a few months. I had the Lowest Lord ESB, one of my favorite of their offerings.

I actually think it’s easier to get to 3 Stars by bike than car. I like that 3 Stars makes such a wide range of quality beers. I was happy to be able to get the Resilience, which was a great beer for a good cause.

The Sunday gravel expedition ride and rescue mission spent some time at the Mt. Defiance Cidery and Distillery in Middleburg, VA. All five of us ordered a flight of ciders and then we topped it off with a flight of artisanal chocolates (chocolateuring anyone?)

The three ciders served to us by the cute server girl were: Farmhouse, Old Volstead and Apple Pie

I did not like the Apple Pie: too apple-y and pie-y for my taste. Better to drink the Farmhouse and eat an actual slice of apple pie, IMO. The Farmhouse, though, was nice and dry and quite drinkable in a very satisfying way.

I enjoyed the Panda Strike Force, a hazy IPA, at Hellbender Brewing Company. The brewery is near the Ft. Totten Metro Station. They have bike parking right out front.

I hadn’t visited since they opened a few years back. I read they filed for bankruptcy a couple years ago. It seems like they may have/are working things out. I believe they started canning over the summer.

At Mt Defiance Cidery and Distillery in Middleburg with CBGanimal, emm, Steve O and Boomer. Had a flight of there 3 ciders, Farmhouse, Old Volstead and Apple Pie. All were dry and delicate. The Farmhouse was very light with some floral notes. Old Volstead was my favorite. I typically don’t like fall spice flavors but the Apple Pie wasn’t bad, though heavier on the cinnamon than I would like.

    #1 Waredaca brewery

Tagged along Eric’s ride to Waredaca brewery in Laytonsville. Great ride with little traffic along suburban and rural roads. First time going to a brewery located on a horse farm. Alas no horses walked into the bar although a couple did pass by. Got a flight to try. Had to get Little Dam presumably named after close by Tridelphia dam. It was a refreshing pale wheat ale. Also liked the Baymore being partial to hazy IPA’s.5bdfcb655ee03f0f0ecc97fc40ca4f9d.jpg002a9151950ea9f73fdf5b1074acb3d4.jpg01dba1ff1f640f22ba5018f7a8c4dac7.jpg
