Steve O
ParticipantGot a surprise text from Boomer towards the end of the work day suggesting we get a beerneuring point. Good idea.
Right Proper. I had the Bosco and the No Depression. I must say that I am finding tart and sour beers very much to my liking lately, and the Bosco fit the bill in that regard. I also enjoyed the No Depression, which was entirely different, dark and full-bodied. Mr Happy showed off his badass balancing skillz.

ParticipantI resemble the above remark by @SteveO and enjoyed a flight of Petit Crete (a Belgian style table beer, ), Shawbacker Schwarzbeir (black larger, 4.6% ABV) and Haxan (robust porter, 7.0% ABV). My favorite was the Shawbacker, as I like darker, full body beers and enjoyed the taste of chocolate and nuttiness. The Haxan ABV was a bit over the top for me, and the resulting twang overshadowed the taste of roasty coffee and chocolate that I love so much. The Petit Crete is on the completely opposite end of the beer spectrum from my other two choices, but I really go it the cleanse my palate between the other two beers that I was really after!
Besides great beers, Right Proper has become a very cool art gallery with lots of new murals and stencil graffiti, including inside the bathrooms, which is worth checking out even if you don’t go there to drink beers.

Participant#FS2019beerneuring #1. I rode Der Rhöner Bierradweg in Bavaria on Wednesday and the only one of the over 16 places on the route that was actually “on” the route was Bionade [not a Bier!] in Ostheim. Of course I blame myself for not researching the locations before doing a spur of the moment five day bike tour to take advantage of really nice weather.

I did manage to find Pax Bräu in Oberelsbach, just two blocks off the route. No tasting room so I had to buy a one liter bottle to go and poured a 25 cl taste for myself. I picked their Pacificator Doppelbock at 8.7 % ABV.

ParticipantThe route was pretty non-existant. Scott’s Addition has an absurd number of breweries within a block or two of each other so you just go to the next closest one. The only one I went to that was out of the way was The Answer. There are a ton of other breweries in downtown as well as just outside, so you could make a more ‘fitness oriented’ route if you prefer. Because the answer was about 4 miles away, I ended up averaging about 1.6 miles per brewery. Without The Answer that would be more like 0.3!

Finally made my way out west!
Caboose. First up is the Vanilla Bean Hobo Stout. Sweet imperial stout. Slight vanilla flavor. They don’t have the best hoppy beers but the dark ones are more on point. This was pretty good, I’d have another.

Second one out in the ‘burbs. Settle Down Easy Brewing.
This one is a new fave! Had a flight and there were multiple great beers. The NE IPA and Peanut Butter Stout were both delicious.
I’ll be back.

Mad Fox. You know where it is, you know what they have. Orange Whip for me, Love is Love for her. I’m liking the Love is Love a bit better.

ParticipantMade my way to Maryland Meadworks since I was riding along the Anacostia river trail today. Got a flight consisting of the Gwen, Tart Gwen, and Dragon Breath. Particularly liked the easy drinking Gwen and the little habenero kick with the Dragon Breath. Also met Rumi who happened to be there! I think she approved…

ParticipantHere’s a close up of the Pax Bräu Pacifator Doppelbock bottle that I lugged all the way back to Frankfurt from Oberelsbach. The guy on the small label on the neck of the bottle is the Pax Bräu crew member who sold me the Bier.

Interesting brewery, as others have noted its deaf owned. No problem communicating though despite my lack of ASL. (also glad that now two of my three beerneurings are places I had not been to before)
The beer was a stout. Moderately malty coffee aroma. Strong coffee-cocoa forward taste, more tart hoppy than I’m used to in a stout. Different but nice.

The ride was a lot of fun, nice big group, great folks, Anacostia River was full after yesterday’ rain and the trail was nice. Coming back we had rain, sleet/rain, more rain, and cold. Worth it though. (we also stopped at a distillery, which I will discuss, and at Maryland Meadworks, but I had already beeneured there)

ParticipantBeerneuring #2: Bluejacket on February 9th. After a ride on the ART with Mr. T in DC (and a run in with other Freezing Saddle-ers at Lake Artemesia), we got lunch at Bluejacket and I had tasters of the Double Nickels and Viktor. They were both tasty dark beers.
Beerneuring #3: Maryland Meadworks. I joined Komorebi’s ride today and enjoyed the Tart Gwen, it was tasty and not too sweet.
Beerneuring #4: Streetcar 82. I got a flight of the Bellevue, Lady Calvert, Lightning Route, and Coco. My favorites were the Lightning Route and Coco.
Thanks for a great ride Komorebi! And convincing the rain not to start until we got to Hyattsville.

ParticipantQuick ride on a Spinlister rented bike in NC visiting my brother and his family. I had to walk the last 200 yards because the road this brewery is on is NOT bikeable. Although I have to say that every driver I encountered gave me plenty of space.
Pictured is their Pumpernickel IPA, which was weird, but if you order a pumpernickel IPA and don’t expect weird, I’m not sure there’s much hope for you. I also had a lemon haze pale ale that was extremely lemony (made more so by the slice of lemon in it). All in all I recommend the place (great outdoor space) but don’t bike there (no bike parking, you’ll die on the road to get there).

I swung by Caboose on the way home from work last Thursday (for coffee) and ended up getting their Vanilla Bean Hobo Stout as well. It didn’t taste like 8% ABV, and the vanilla wasn’t subtle (in a good way). I know I was talking to someone recently about putting a vanilla bean in a bottle of bourbon for flavoring, and now I really want to do that.

ParticipantMy one beer for the year.
It was an IPA from Streetcar Brewing in Hyattsville. I’m sure it was probably pretty good for a beer, if you like drinking beer. Now I’m good until 2020!
