Do you like to bike? Do you like beer? If so, this side bet is for you. The rules are simple:

    1. Ride your bike to a brewery or brewpub. I estimate that there are over 50 breweries or brewpubs that can be reached by bike from DC, over 10 of them are in DC.
    2. Acquire a beer brewed at that location.
    3. Take a picture of the beer.
    4. Taste the beer.
    5. Post on this thread the picture of the beer, the location, and a comment about the beer. It can be anything from “tastes mostly like beer” to “the hop aroma contained grapefruit pith and apricot that was matched by a good malt backbone, which added a hint of graham cracker”.
    6. Whomever posts entries from the most number of breweries or brewpubs by the end of Freezing Saddles wins!
    7. The winner will receive a bottle of beer that reflects the nature of the competition. If only a few participate and the winner had 3 entries, then you will get a good bottle but nothing super special. If the competition is heated and the winner has 30 entries, then I will do my best to get something special.

    A few further clarifications:

    1. BE SAFE! No riding while under the influence. If you rode your bike to the brewery but find that you need to get a ride or take Metro home, the entry still counts.
    2. You can go to more than one brewery on a ride, but see above.
    3. The beer must be made at that location. Having a 3 Stars at the local bar does not count. Nothing at the Capital City in DC counts because the beer is made somewhere else (and RIP Cap City Shirlington).
    4. Some brewpubs have more than one location. A trip to each location counts.
    5. Keep in mind that this competition is to visit the most number of breweries and brewpubs. Once you visit and have a beer at a brewery or brewpub, then you cannot post another entry for that brewery or brewpub, even if you go back later and try a different beer.
    6. It is not required, but try to go on at least one brewery tour. Fun, educational and you usually get to sample beer.

    Ardent Craft Ales

My favorite is the IPA X (NE style w Citra!!) and the Bourbon Barrel Aged Imperial Milk Stout. The latter is perfect as a dessert!

I wasn’t a fan of the Leigh St. There is a fruity aftertaste I’m starting to see in some NE IPAs that turns me off.

    Islay Brewing Company

Interesting stuff here, Brown Betty is a very dark cider-y. Grapefruit IPA is grapefruit-y but quite pithy. Chai porter is a little on the light side but the peanut butter porter is suuuper peanut buttery!

Busky Hard Cider. Jalapeño is a bit too dry. Duck Sauce doesn’t really taste like anything Asian. Big place and big selection but underwhelming.

Blonde stouts are always interesting but the DIPA is worth coming back for.

Posting for @Beach [emoji267] Felipe who is taking a break from Social Media but wants beerneuring points anyway…

Mad Fox Brewery, Falls Church VA

@beach [emoji267] Felipe had the Kellerbier Kolsch, with a side of steak frits! He seemed to enjoy the crisp & delicate taste of an unfiltered German-style ale with light lemon notes and a semi-dry finish, which was Gold medal winner at GABF 2011 (long before he got into cycling, let alone freezing saddles).

I had the razor burn Mexican chocolate stout….hijole!…so much so that this is my second visit, so it doesn’t count for me.

I am very interested in seeing your route for the Richmond brew tour. :)
I have been to several of those breweries, but never by bike.

At Chubby Squirrel in Fairfax City with fxbooks. I had the Redemption Porter because nitro. It was ok. Had the creamy mouthfeel that you expect from a Nitro pour. Just not a lot of flavor.

At Ornery Beer Company in Fairfax City with fxbooks. I had the Occoquan Oats, an amber brewed with, uh…oats. Pretty complex for an amber with sweet malty notes followed by spicy hops.

Beerneuring while in Banff! Actually in the neighboring town of Canmore. Went to Grizzly Paw Brewing and tried out a flight consisting of the Evolution IPA, Uberwintern Munich Dunkel, Grumpy Bear Honey wheat, and Three Sisters Pale Ale since I figured I should get something named after one of the surrounding mountain ranges. The bartender also suggested the Blue Cow Milk Stout so I had that as well. All were solid. Particularly enjoyed the caramely Dunkel and the smooth Milk Stout. The unfiltered Evolution IPA was also quite flavorful without being too hoppy like many Western IPA’s. Instead of thumbs up, paws up!
