Do you like to bike? Do you like beer? If so, this side bet is for you. The rules are simple:

1. Ride your bike to a brewery or brewpub. I estimate that there are over 50 breweries or brewpubs that can be reached by bike from DC, over 10 of them are in DC.
2. Acquire a beer brewed at that location.
3. Take a picture of the beer.
4. Taste the beer.
5. Post on this thread the picture of the beer, the location, and a comment about the beer. It can be anything from “tastes mostly like beer” to “the hop aroma contained grapefruit pith and apricot that was matched by a good malt backbone, which added a hint of graham cracker”.
6. Whomever posts entries from the most number of breweries or brewpubs by the end of Freezing Saddles wins!
7. The winner will receive a bottle of beer that reflects the nature of the competition. If only a few participate and the winner had 3 entries, then you will get a good bottle but nothing super special. If the competition is heated and the winner has 30 entries, then I will do my best to get something special.

A few further clarifications:

1. BE SAFE! No riding while under the influence. If you rode your bike to the brewery but find that you need to get a ride or take Metro home, the entry still counts.
2. You can go to more than one brewery on a ride, but see above.
3. The beer must be made at that location. Having a 3 Stars at the local bar does not count. Nothing at the Capital City in DC counts because it is all made in Shirlington.
4. Some brewpubs have more than one location. A trip to each location counts.
5. Keep in mind that this competition is to visit the most number of breweries and brewpubs. Once you visit and have a beer at a brewery or brewpub, then you cannot post another entry for that brewery or brewpub, even if you go back later and try a different beer.
6. It is not required, but try to go on at least one brewery tour. Fun, educational and you usually get to sample beer.

My second #fs2018beerneuring ride. Another loop around Bloomington, IN stopping at The Tap at the corner of of College and Kirkwood Avenues on the Courthouse Square (next door to yesterday’s The Inkwell coffeeride). I forgot to take a picture of the tasting flight full, ooops. I had a flight of four, Brickyard Vienna style lager, Celtic Red Irish red ale, Bionic Dragon American IPA, and Dubbel Impact Belgian dubbel. And yes, they all tasted like beer!

Beerneuring #5, Denizens

Met up with Sunyata’s Beer Ride. Another brewery I have never been to before.

Tried Denizens Lowest Lord (!!!!), an ESB. I found it to have a nicely malty, toffee, almost dark cherry aroma. Definite herbal hops bitterness balanced the malt on the taste.

Help me, brother. They’ve caught me and I fear I’ll never taste beer again.

So, in order to attempt to catch up (futile with Jon in Australia, I know), I took a little brew tour yesterday.

The first stop was supposed to be Cap City, but they apparently changed their hours without telling anyone. So, the first stop was Heritage in Clarendon.

I had their quite delicious double IPA, Double Taxation. It was hoppy with a bit of a bourbon bite at the end.

Then, someone pointed out that the Double Taxation was not actually brewed at the Clarendon location and the only beer they brew locally was the Heritage Brewing House Amber Ale. Oh darn. You mean I have to have another beer?!

It was not as good as the DIPA, but was sweet with a hint of honey. Not bad, but not something I would get again if a better choice exists.

The next stop was Right Proper Brewing Company in Shaw.

Here I had the Runcible (which is apparently the exact same beer that I had there last year… whoops). It was a Belgian style IPA (?!) and was pretty darned delicious. A hint of citrus and a lot of funky hop.

Next stop was Denizens. I wish this were closer, because it is a really neat place with good food and really decent beer.

Here I had the Southside, which was a Rye IPA. It paired nicely with the mac and cheese and brussels sprouts that we snacked on.

We tried to stop by 3 Stars, but they were closed for a private event. So sad.

So, the next stop was Hellbender. I had the Groundskeeper Islay, which is a Scotch Ale/Wee Heavy. It was good, but I kind of wanted it to be a bit more boozy than it was. Nice notes of peat, though.

The next stop was Right Proper in Brookland. We determined that you could spend hours just looking at all the little scenes in the murals at both Right Propers. But the Bookland location definitely has some cool depictions.

Anyway, I had the Biere De Mars, which is a nice farmhouse ale that was super yeasty. Delicious. (I apparently forgot to rate it on untappd, but I do remember thinking about getting a growler fill of this one.

Second to last stop of the night was Atlas Brew Works.

This place allows dogs INSIDE!

I had the cask Ponzi, which was super hoppy. My Untappd comment was that it made me glad for friends who go on drinking adventures with me… I think that about sums it up!

Last stop of the night was Bluejacket. This was the first time I have ever had a beer inside at Bluejacket. It was nice inside… Kind of “romantic”, even.

(This is kind of a running joke, but last year on the brew tour, I caught a picture of Jan and Dane staring at each other… This year, they were staring at a commercial for an electronic bible…)

Anyway, I had their Lazy Jane, which an Imperial IPA. It was a touch on the sweet side, but overall not bad.

It was a great time and I am grateful for all the awesome folks that came out and rode in the drizzle with me for an entire day of beer drinking. We should definitely do it again sometime soon! (But maybe not seven breweries on a Sunday again; waking up this morning was a little rough…)

I have one more to post that’s probably bending the rules a bit and will be subject to sjclaeys approval, but we get on a plane in about 4 hours to come home. Didn’t make it to as many breweries as I’d hoped, but so many of them are only open Thurs-Sun and we had wedding and wedding-related activities Sat and Sun so it really cut into our beerneuring time.

Your beer tour is quite impressive, though. I’m not sure I would have been able to bike home.

Beerneuring #3 at Bloomington Brewing Co at Crosstown on 10th St across from my IU freshman dorm. I again did a tasting flight, this time it was six, Kirkwood Cream Ale, Ruby Bloom Amber, Quarrymen Pale Ale, Java Porter, Hoosier Harbor IPA, and non-alcoholic root beer. And yes, they all tasted like beer, except the porter which had a slight coffee flavor and the root beer which tasted like sassafras.

Good on you for following the Beerneuring rules at Heritage. Next year there might be a new rule to deduct points if a brewery tour is held without the Beerneuring Brewmaster knowing beforehand!

Doh! I am a terrible beerneuring participant. Will ensure invites are sent from now on. :)
