Got the sampler and played Battleship with fxbooks who beat me 2 out 3 games.

Strike a Chord, a pilsner which I tend to gravitate away from. Got the citrus notes and is a decidedly a refreshing beach beer.
Street Beer, a pale ale. Had bitter malty notes without the boozy finish you’d expect from a 9% beer. Yum.
Ones and Zeros, a brown ale. Citrus and hoppy notes.
1821 Dark Ale, a Belgian strong dark ale. The battleship game must have been getting intense because all I wrote was that it was my favorite.

We needed food after our intense Battleship match at NDB so we popped over to Cap City. I had the Higher Education, an American IPA. It was grapefruity and clean and I immediately felt smarter.

Jan 19, the night before the govt shutdown – https://www.strava.com/activities/1365452408

I love that Port City is so close to my office, and I foresee many Fri happy hours there in my future! I had the Integral IPA which had subtle pineapple while maintaining the hoppy profile.

After an amazing Komorebi-led ride, we stopped at Blue Jacket. I had the Cobras, an American IPA. Nice, slightly creamy and floral.

Lake Anne is one of my favorite places, especially in the summer, because of their deck that overlooks the plaza and lake. It’s also one of my favorites because my friend Nancy is within walking distance so I usually ping her when I’m 30 min away and she meets me out there. Sadly, Nancy was out of town and I had to drink alone. :(

I had the Blood Orange strong ale which initially only tasted like my tears since Nancy wasn’t there. It was, however, a great beer with bright citrus up front and just enough balance of fruity/floral and hop notes in the finish.

I got the Optimal Wit, which I’ve consumed in bottles many times before. It was enjoyable, tasted like beer, and got to enjoy some good company (this was an impromptu BAFS happy hour two Fridays ago).

At Caboose for Friday’s happy hour

This is the Boxcar Brown Ale, which I have had before. I like it for its richness without being as heavy as a porter or stout.
Also – good turnout of biking buds!

So, because I failed miserably last week at Beernuering, I went back to Caboose for a mulligan.

I had the barrel aged Darkened Heart. It was quite delicious, malty with a hefty dose of smoky, bourbony woodchip.

On Saturday, we rode out to Leesburg to do a short gravel loop with some friends for a birthday celebration. On the way back, we stopped at a few breweries.

First up, Loudoun Brewing Company. This place consistently has great beer, an awesome atmosphere, and (now that Leesburg has outlawed food trucks) super tasty pretzels!

I had the Almond Joy, which is a coconut almond Imperial Stout. It was quite tasty. The almond was just a hint of sweetness behind the nutty goodness of the coconut. I have never had an almond joy, but I bet this beer is better than the candy bar!

I also had a Beartrap IPA, which was also quite tasty and had an amazing ruby glow!

No trip to Leesburg is complete with out a stop by the original Crooked Run. They had an altbier that I just could not resist.

    Alternator:

It was rich and malty and easily drinkable, especially knowing I had a 20 mile ride ahead of me.

On the way home, the headwind was pretty brutal. So, we did what any logical cyclist would do… We ducked into Old Ox for a quick reprieve from the wind!

Enter X-Ray Specs, their new Rye IPA. I love Rye beers, so this was a no brainer. It was relatively good, but pretty non-descript. They were also having a fund raiser for the Ashburn Volunteer Fire Department, so I got to talk shop with a couple of their guys, which was kind of fun.

Our last stop of the day was Beltway Brewing Company. They had a TON of great beers, but since they are a contract brewery and I am not sure that ever got clarified last year, I went ahead and got one of their house branded beers.

    New Classic Extra Mild Ale:

It was actually pretty flavourful and not that mild. I enjoyed it almost as much as I enjoyed playing Mad Libs and Foosball. 😎

Doing this one in real-time, sitting at the bar. Got a flight with the Kellerbier Kölsch, Mason’s Dark Mild, Barrel Aged Crazy Ivan, and the Orange Whip IPA.

All pretty solid, but definitely glad to encounter a Crazy Ivan that’s not a reckless jogger. I also enjoyed the Orange Whip more than most IPAs, less hoppy I suppose.

    Beerneuring #4 Port City Brewing

After tasty ramen and a lovely ride led by Komorebi, I decided to go to PCB, because they keep filling my FB feed with events relative to new releases, and old occasionals, and so forth. And its FS, and a chance for miles.

I don’t think I have ever been to a release event. It was very crowded. I put aside the thought of getting a flight, and decided to just get the new release. Port City COLOSSAL Seven. A Scotch Ale. It was slightly sweet, caramel, raisins, dark fruit, very smooth, hint of hops.

    An excellent beer.

Hazy something IPA at New District. I don’t know if I’m still getting my sense of taste back after being sick or if this beer is just blah. I’ll blame my sense of taste this time because I like New District. We saw some forum/BAFS people. It was good.

I also had their oatmeal stout that they released today. I was pleasant.
