Do you like to bike? Do you like beer? If so, this side bet is for you. The rules are simple:

    1. Ride your bike to a brewery or brewpub. I estimate that there are over 50 breweries or brewpubs that can be reached by bike from DC, over 10 of them are in DC.
    2. Acquire a beer brewed at that location.
    3. Take a picture of the beer.
    4. Taste the beer.
    5. Post on this thread the picture of the beer, the location, and a comment about the beer. It can be anything from “tastes mostly like beer” to “the hop aroma contained grapefruit pith and apricot that was matched by a good malt backbone, which added a hint of graham cracker”.
    6. Whomever posts entries from the most number of breweries or brewpubs by the end of Freezing Saddles wins!
    7. The winner will receive a bottle of beer that reflects the nature of the competition. If only a few participate and the winner had 3 entries, then you will get a good bottle but nothing super special. If the competition is heated and the winner has 30 entries, then I will do my best to get something special.

    A few further clarifications:

    1. BE SAFE! No riding while under the influence. If you rode your bike to the brewery but find that you need to get a ride or take Metro home, the entry still counts.
    2. You can go to more than one brewery on a ride, but see above.
    3. The beer must be made at that location. Having a 3 Stars at the local bar does not count. Nothing at the Capital City in DC counts because it is all made in Shirlington.
    4. Some brewpubs have more than one location. A trip to each location counts.
    5. Keep in mind that this competition is to visit the most number of breweries and brewpubs. Once you visit and have a beer at a brewery or brewpub, then you cannot post another entry for that brewery or brewpub, even if you go back later and try a different beer.
    6. It is not required, but try to go on at least one brewery tour. Fun, educational and you usually get to sample beer.

Jrenaut #2 RAR Brewing. This is a Hyde w/Galaxy IPA. It’s hazy and fruity and pleasant but not my favorite.494bf6c4576eecbbef16341e8bb6d01d.jpg

I’m pretty sure that this is their best beer: https://rarbrewing.com/beer/lumber-sexual/

Yeah, but I do need to ride home. It’s late in the day for 8%

A little delayed, but got the brewmaster’s flight from Caboose in Vienna on Jan 5 while hunting the Calvinball. The saison was my favorite of the four, followed by the Citra IPA, the brown ale, and the ever-present Vienna lager. I have neither the palate nor the vocabulary to properly describe the beers, so I’ll go with the the ranking and a general comment that they all tasted like beer.

Stopped at Old Ox yesterday and drank both a cherry sour (Funky Face, pictured) and a Belgian dubbel (Hipmonk, no photo). I’m a fan of sour beers, so the cherry one was right up my alley.

This is their IPA. It’s fine.

Rules question – we parked basically next door, ate lunch, then rode around for a bit and came back. Does this count? Here is the Strava track.

Also, if you are ever in St Michael’s, the beer at ESB is fine but the tacos at Gina’s next door are FANTASTIC and totally worth the trip.

Tried a Facing Future Vol 4, which is supposed to be a NE style IPA. I was hoping for something like a Maine Brewing Company Mo, which is like liquid Christmas tree. Instead I got this, which was fine.

I went to Caboose yesterday and totally forgot to take photos of my beers. Whoops. Guess that means I will just have to go back!

I tagged along on the Sunday ride yesterday. We stopped at 2 breweries:
    Franklin’s in Hyattsville

I like sour and this beer delivered

    Blue Jacket in DC

Cask porter; very yummy. Especially good with friends.

    Beerneuring #1 Franklins

I had seen Franklins when walking around Hyattsville a few years ago, and had somehow overlooked putting it on my list of must visit breweries. Thanks to Komorebi for putting it on our path. Atmosphere was great.

I tried a Twisted Turtle Pale Ale. It was an easy drinking pale ale, with a grassy aroma, and a taste of grass and pine hops.

    Beerneuring #2 BlueJacket

While my goal again this year is to beerneur at breweries I have never been to , its hard to avoid BlueJacket (especially when it is a destination on a great group ride) This time I tried For the Company, a Helles Lager. I was warm at that point, and in the mood for something light, and this did the trick, but had the herbal hops to not be boring.

    Beerneuring #3, DC Brau

So this is what FS beerneuring is about right? Going to the brewery on your list of ones you have not been to – selecting the one in (arguably) the least bike friendly location of any DC brewery, carefully plotting a comfortable route, then being persuaded by your friends to ride a mile down Bladensburg Road instead. A great time!

I tried On The Wings Of Armageddon which I have heard about for some time. It was a nice citrusy DIPA, with a fair amount of malt flavor, the 9.2 ABV was not obvious in the taste (though may have been reflected in the conversation) – an enjoyable beer to be sure, though I am not sure what all the fuss was about.

As seen in lordofthemark’s photo above, I too was at DC Brau, and had my own OTWOA. The trip was made even better by meeting one of my BAFS teammates randomly on the Anacostia Trail. Because apparently if you’ve ever touched a bike, Judd knows you, he convinced handlebarsdc and her non-BAFS friend to come with us.

Bladensburg Rd was not particularly fun.

I decided to combine Beerneuring with Calvinball since Caboose was just a short hop from the Calvinball. https://www.strava.com/activities/1342389658

I had the Dutchess Porter which was mildly sweet and malty. Good thing it was easy to drink because I ended up carrying the 30 pound Calvinbell home afterwards.
