And DC just beat the previous all-time record high for the month of JUNE. We’re up to 104 now.

Seriously, it’s like oven hot out there.

Good thing the MVT always has a head wind no matter which way I’m riding. Bring on the breeze.

Will anyone visit me in the hospital over the weekend?

For those of you looking to make some headway on me in the NBC, I took my one and only ride for the day about an hour ago — a 2.4 mile downhill jaunt on a CaBi, and even that was bad. Please take it easy going home tonight. Take a rest in the middle of your ride even. Not the day to overdo it.

Heat + breeze = convection oven. You can now cook in half the time!

P.S. To everyone doing the Total 200 tomorrow — be careful and get through safely. Let us know you made it okay, or even better, if you let discretion be the better part of valor. We’ll accept it in the form of war stories.

I couldn’t face That Hill today on the way home. Yesterday was bad enough. I’ll be sweating on the Metro :p

I’m just glad my shifter broke this week and I’m stuck on 7. I’d hate to pedal too easily.

It’s a safety feature. If you started spinning too fast today you might spontaneously combust like a Spinal Tap drummer.

Well that wasn’t too bad, though I’m glad it was only eight miles. The odd thing was my seat post falling apart as soon as I stepped off my bike.

The sun started getting to me by West Falls Church – but I was pretty close to home. Stopped twice to refill my water bottle with tepid fountain water. UPSIDE – NPS put out a sprinkler by the Lincoln Memorial – nice.

Rolling out of our underground garage up the ramp and into the heat today kinda felt like that scene from the Chronicles of Riddick when the Purifier walked out of the safety of the hangar and into the solar induced storm on the prison planet… yeah, that’s what it felt like.

Overall made it home ok. Dousing myself with my water bottle helped. I still saw about 5 joggers on the MVT near Crystal City. Ridiculous.

My ride home at 6:30 wasn’t too bad at all, considering what I was expecting. It helped to ride at an easy pace and to come across pleasant company to ride with.

I did a swim speed workout instead. Almost got a bit of a sunburn, but not quite. Even in the water, it was kind of hot, but I didn’t have any major issues. I find running to be the worst on these 100F days. At least there’s more of a breeze on the bike and you can carry a lot more water.

I threw my filled water bottle in the freezer at work 1 hr before I set out. Nice idea, I thought to myself, but halfway home it was already warm.

I saw at least 5 other cyclists, and around the same number of joggers.

Well, without thinking I filled up my tires to the max psi. For some reason I got it into my head that I wanted to see how they rode at max psi (something I had never done before) and didn’t take into account that it was 94 degrees outside. Less than three miles into my ride – Ba Boom! My back tire went out and took off a bit of the sidewall to boot.

Fortunately a very nice young guy stopped to help me with fixing the flat. For some reason I have a very difficult time getting the bead squeezed onto the rims on this bike. I’m gonna be buying some different tires this wknd so hopefully that issue disappears.

So a word to the wise, don’t fill your tires up as much as you usually do during this hot weather. Fireworks are best left to the 4th.
