ParticipantHopefully everyone made it safely through the worst (as of now) of this heat.
My bike computers’ temperature gauge worked itself out and decided to hold a stable temperature today at least. It read 85 all day in the shop and 102 consistently during my ride at 4.
It really is a wild experience not realizing how much you are perspiring at one time. Luckily I had already worked through 4L of water two mostly frozen bottles with nuun tabs. I too played it safe with parking my car in the work parking lot at the bottom of the hills near my house and off of the high traffic areas.
It was a very rewarding to test myself within as safe as possible limitations.
In a recent post I mentioned loosing roughly 2 mph. To try to combat this I rotated my tires (because no one within a 5 minute ride had Conti Ultra Race) and bumped the pressure up to 115, and took a Clif Gel prior to leaving the shop. My rear tire has not fared the last few weeks well, so I removed it to see if some of the numerous cuts and gashes had penetrated the outer carcass and on closer inspection had not made it through the second layer.
Anyone going out this weekend?

ParticipantHmm, well it was a nice 72 degrees in the weight room this evening. As for pictures, gee whiz, my crop top is on lay-away and they don’t make a kilt in my size. I will ride tomorrow because not to ride will result in a great disturbance in the Force. I’m happier when I ride even if I don’t get to go fast. I may ask for a next of kin notification form and a release from liability though.
The TDF was fantastic. Period. Hands down.

Your day sounds much more fun than mine. My morning activity will be a seemingly endless string of oil changes. Sigh, some times no matter how much seniority you have you still get to play in the trenches.
Is the riding partner of which you speak yours wife? I know mine really hates being left behind, I now ride with a little mirror just to keep half an eye on where she is.
As I’m sitting out side writing this I cannot help but feel the humidity is slightly less intense (not less it’s just easier to breathe)Stay hydrated folks

ParticipantOn Saturday I did a 102 mile ride on the Blue Ridge Parkway (Roanoke Mountain to Smart view mainly). I was thinking, it’s got to be 5 or 10 degrees cooler up in the mountains, right? Right, not so much.
Got caught in a couple of refreshing thunderstorms (the best was while doing the 1800 foot climb up the mountain) but was still pretty much wasted by the end. I was slugging down electrolyte tabs and taking in as much water as I could, but I still kept getting bad leg cramps. Still… I was riding on the Blue Ridge Parkway, so I can’t complain.

Nice ride!
Got 30’ish in on Saturday, was hot but not as bad as I expected. Biggest mistake I made was riding my Vaya thinking I was going to hang with my riding partners road bike. I ended up working harder and still going slow. That’ll teach me to bring a spork to a knife fight.

ParticipantIt was definitely hot this weekend. I rode the MTB at Fountainhead on Sunday morning early and it was just awful out. Damn fun ride though.
I was out on the bike for 3 or 4 hours on Saturday running errands. It was pretty sucky, but still fun. I dripped a lot of sweat on various local businesses. They were kind enough not to kick me out.

ParticipantI slogged through the Sat. evening 5K. Probably my slowest 5K in a couple years. I lined up at the back of the main pack because I didn’t feel like fighting my way closer to the front. With the heat and humidity, it was just too easy to ease off and treat it like a tempo workout. A heck of a lot of fast runners at the race. Some guys ran it sub-15:00! Plus a 76-yr-old woman posted a time of 32:00. That was incredible.
I didn’t ride at all over the weekend. I plan to ride today. Hope I can avoid the thunderstorms that are predicted for today. At least the temperatures at back to normal (upper 80s/low 90s).

ParticipantSaturday was a group ride from Oxford through St Michaels to Tilghman Island, MD (and back). 43 miles in hot, full sun, almost took almost eight hours to ride three hours including at late lunch/early dinner stop at the Crab Claw. Sunday was a short ten mile north Arlington leisure spin during the heat of the late afternoon. Where’s the rain, I don’t think I want to avoid it today, especially since I don’t have fenders on the bike now.
