You get some great shots Pete.

ParticipantIn order to avoid the worst of it I was riding around last night just before twilight. I would like to alert all deer sympathizers that the little critters are out during this time crowding the W&O trail in Vienna just like the Speedo runners at TDF. As if the heat weren’t bad enough.

Thank you.
I always commute with a pack. It adds a bit of heat, but it makes life easier at work.

ParticipantI’ve taken to completely soaking my jersey with water before I leave. I figure I’m going to soak it through with sweat after a few miles anyways, might as well just get it wet in advance. Helps for a few miles anyways.

ParticipantYesterday on the WOD I was sprinting through the sunshine, and coasting through the shade

ParticipantI don’t know if I’ll ride today but I did a 75-minute run this morning. Yeah, it was hot. “Only” 98F heat index at that point, but that was still bad. I had planned on a longer run but I wasn’t feeling it. Nice to see that the bike/run lane over the Humpback Bridge is now completely clear. No more construction work going on next to the lane. The crews still have to install the railing on top of the stone wall separating the bikes from the cars, but that’s merely an aesthetic detail. It’s a safe and well-designed lane now.

This is a big key to riding and running in this kind of weather. Make reasonable plans for what you’re going to do outside, but make sure that you’ve got a safe bail-out option that allows you to cut things short or get somewhere safe where you can relax and cool down.

ParticipantYeah, I planned out a looped route that kept me close to home at all times. Even if I had stopped when I was a little farther away, I would have been fine walking at any point. I generally do well in the heat, though I haven’t done as many morning workouts this summer. I was doing some fast strides early in the run, which helped tire me out and raise my body temperature. The frozen strawberry fruit “popsicle” felt pretty good afterward. So did the bottle of chilled Gatorade Endurance that I gulped down.
I did a lot of hot-weather running last summer, often in the afternoon. I adjusted to the heat after one or two workouts.
I’m going to be running in the evening 5K tomorrow night. That is going to be insane. Probably 100F temperature at race time, with a heat index close to 110F. But it’s a short race and they’ll have plenty of chilled water and misting sprays on hand. And post-race beer and food. I ran it last year in similar conditions (98F temperature) and finished in decent shape.
Cycling is a little easier in the heat because of the faster speed and the cooling effect of the wind. Well, maybe today’s wind might not cool anyone down that much. At least it’s easier to carry more half-frozen water bottles (Camelbak Chill Jackets) on a bike than while running.
Only a couple more days of the brutal heat. Then we’re back to more normal conditions on Sunday (low 90s).

ParticipantDon’t forget about your phone.
I usually carry mine in my back jersey pocket and that’s fine until I start pouring water over myself.
The sad thing is I was pouring the water down my back so as not to make a spectacle of myself pouring it down my front.
The phone seems mostly ok this afternoon.Lesson learned: Just go for the whole spectacle thing.

ParticipantThe National Weather Service just listed the heat index at 119 degrees.

ParticipantThat which doesn’t kill you…
Besides, this is the perfect opportunity to weigh yourself after the evening ride and use that dehydrated weight as a completely unreasonable benchmark to flog yourself with around the holidays.July 22, 2011 at 8:24 pm #928522txgoonie

Yo, me too! The biggest bummer was that, being soaked when I got home, I immediately froze upon hitting the A/C and had to strip the wet stuff off. Couldn’t bear to put them back on to ride to work, so I had gone through 2 changes of clothes before 6:30.

ParticipantWasn’t as bad as I expected. Some clouds came in around 6, and by the time I got started at 6:45, it wasn’t that bad. Had the trails completely to myself. I had out at 3pm just to walk up the block — that was unbearable. So I was expecting worse.
