ParticipantBikeWashington has something on this: http://bikewashington.org/routes/dc2balt/index.htm
Disclaimer: I’ve never tried it, and don’t know that area at all, but it might be worth looking at….

I grew up in that area and still have family there. Looking at the cue sheet that route’s doable. There’s honestly no really good way. Anything that keeps you off Route 1 as much as possible is a good thing.

ParticipantI ride regularly from Ellicott City area (just SW of Baltimore) to Rosslyn via DC.
I have a good route on the West side of 29 that is quite pleasant, then linking up with Capital Crescent Trail.
Coming out of Baltimore, you would want to head west, maybe on Gwynn Falls Trail towards Woodlawn.
Then through Catonsville and main street Ellicott City, probably on a combination of Edmonson Ave and Frederick Rd.
Then several options, most bike friendly, to Columbia, over by Cenntenial Park.
Cedar Lane, Guilford, Hall Shop Road, Browns Bridge Road, Ednor Road, Layhill Rd.
Now the worst part, a mile or so on Georgia Ave.
You can link up with Capital Crescent Trail from there, which is very pleasant all the way down to Georgetown. Then head across to DC to final destination.
It’s not the most direct since it heads out west a bit to start out, but it’s pleasant.
Let me know if you are interested in this and want me to fill in the gaps.February 21, 2011 at 3:56 pm #925071Dirt
ParticipantThank you Chris.
I will play with that info using Google Maps tonight and see what I can come up with. I’ll maybe run something past you in the next day or two. I appreciate your your assistance.
Best wishes,
Pete

ParticipantThat Bikewashington.org route hasn’t been updated for the MBT. From the Taylor street bridge (or even better the Monroe street bridge), it’s a straight shot down 8th street NE to the MBT, which drops you just north of Union Station. I can’t say enough about how much the MBT helps us living NE of DC. They even had crews chipping ice near the NY Ave metro this morning.

ParticipantFrom Layhill Rd., why not turn onto the Matthew Henson Trail? That leads to the Rock Creek Trail. That takes you to Beach Drive in the District. Or you can take the spur off of RCT to Susanna Lane near Chevy Chase, ride 100 ft. on Jones Mill Rd. and get onto the CCT from there.
This would let you avoid Georgia Ave.
Note: I haven’t ridden on either the MHT or the RCT in Montgomery Co., so I don’t know what the trail conditions are like.

ParticipantWe did a pretty cool ride down. I’ll post up the route that we took. I’m not sure that it would do very well for smaller groups, but it worked out pretty well for the 14 or 15 of us (with SRAM Neutral Support vehicle in tow). It dropped us into College Park and we took bike paths into the city from there. Very little of the ride was on scary roads. Lots of it was pretty.

ParticipantDoes anyone know of anyone who makes this commute on a semi-regular basis? Hard for me to get riding time in and I’m moving to B-More with the wife (who’s in JHU), so I was morbidly curious.

I know someone who does this Bmore to College Park segment once or twice a week. Also Dirt has posted a route for the Tim Johnson ride on this thread: http://bikearlingtonforum.com/showthread.php?1809-Tim-Johnson-s-Ride-On-Washington-Come-Ride-With-US!!!!-HOLD-THIS-DATE!/page4
You should take a day off and do the Tim Johnson ride to check out that route! If you don’t like it, talk to Yo at Proteus bikes about her route. -Jeff
