ParticipantHello winter cyclists! I have the honor of being your team captain, mentor, cheerleader, cajoler etc for this year’s freezing saddles season. Shout out to @jrenaut who will join me as co-admin for our Strava Club (and likely this thread, too;-)
Here’s what you need to do for us to become a real BAFS team.
1. Ride your bike. Every. Dang. Day. At least a mile, please! Consistency, even if only an original sleaze ride (1 mile), not mega miles, defines BAFS success.
2. Confirm receipt of this message either here or via email so that we know that you (i) are a real person, committed to the silliness of BAFS2025, (ii) understand what to do next, and (iii) introduce yourself to the team.
3. Follow me Boomer Cycles on Strava so that jrenaut or I can invite you to join our Strava Club BAFS 2025 Team 6. Our club is by invitation only and will be sent via Strava once we follow each other on Strava … or alternatively you can seek out our club on Strava Clubs and one of us will accept your request to join. By invitation only will keep the Bike Forum and Strava groupies from crashing our party, skewing our Team’s scoring, and having to evict them later (and why the link is not posted here). Joining our Team 6 Strava Club is CRITICAL for your hard earned miles to be credited to our BAFS2025 team 6! Otherwise, your efforts will wither in the ether.
4. Follow everyone else on our team (on Strava) so that we can encourage each other, have fun and maybe even do a group ride together.
5. Suggest a name for our Team: maybe like the Pedalwans (for you Star Warriors out there … thanks to @SJMinArlington for fact checking my reference;-)???
6. Did I say ride your bike? Every. Dang. Day. At least a mile? Pretty Please!
Feel free to post any questions here that you have as there are seasoned BAFS veterans on this team that can likely answer you quickly, especially if I’m out riding my bike in a blizzard and offline.
About me: I’ve been doing this crazy challenge since 2015, am usually at least an everyday #decasleaze + rider, participate in and/or sponsored pointless prizes (#publicartfinder) for motivation and average around 1700 +/- miles during past BAFS seasons …. barring any unexpected business travel (low risk since I am now semi-retired) or injuries (moderate risk as I am now mildly arthritic, along with the rest of the kids my age). I have flirted with past hyper-mile individual leaderboard competitions and once finished in the Top Ten. Last year I dropped out near the end due to an injury. I’ve been on BAFS teams that won it all (2017) and came in almost dead last (2024). The difference was the number of team members who rode consistently, irrespective of the mileage. It’s effectively impossible for a team to make up points for those who don’t ride, even if the team has a few big riders. I live near the Potomac Yards Metro Station in Alexandria, 2 blocks away from the 4 Mile Run Trail (4MRT) that easily connects me to either the Mount Vernon Trail (south of DCA) or the W&OD trailhead in Shirlington (Arlington) VA. I’m always open to mentor newbies or just ride along with you for as long/far as you are confident, especially if that will get you out on your bike!:-)
What about you?
