Do you like to bike? Do you like distilled spirits? Do you feel excluded by #BAFS2019beerneuring or #BAFS2019wineuring? If so, this side bet is for you. The rules are simple:

    1. Ride your bike to any distillery for at least a Sleaze ride.

    2. Drink spirits at that location.

    3. Take a picture of the spirit (literally speaking, that is).

    4. Makes notes on said spirit.

    5. Post on this thread the picture of the spirit, the location, and your tasting notes. It can be anything, like “the spirit was clear and I liked it” or something sophisticated like @rcannon100 would say that we wouldn’t be able to comprehend. Extra points to those who use the above hashtag and name/number their spirit rides, otherwise we might be too full of the spirit to credit your entry.

    6. Whomever posts entries from the most number of distilleries by the end of Freezing Saddles wins!

    7. The winner will receive a bike ride tour of DC distilleries led by the prize sponosors, or a bottle of spirits of the sponsor’s choice if injured and unable to ride.

    A few further clarifications:

    1. BE SAFE! No riding while under the influence. If you rode your bike to the distillery but find that you need to get a ride or take Uber/Metro home, the entry still counts. Note: I had to do this after failing to be able to ride my bike after my first DC distillery tour led by those less responsible than myself. This was before the age of Uber (for those millennials out there).

    2. You can go to more than one distillery on a ride, but see previous rule.

    3. The spirit must be made at that location where consumed.

    4. Some distilleries have more than one location. A trip to each location counts.

    5. Keep in mind that this competition is to visit the most number of distilleries. Once you visit a distillery and consume their spirit, then you cannot post another entry for that distillery, even if you go back later and try a different spirit.

    6. It is not required, but try to go on at least one distillery tour. Fun, educational and you usually get to sample spirits.

    7. In case of a tie, the winner will be the cyclist who visits the most distilleries while cycling the LEAST amount of miles.

    8. These rules are arbitrary and subject to change on the whim of the sponsors.

This pointless prize is jointly sponsored by @BoomerCycles and @BeachFelipe but we may consult with others in case of any need for interpretations of above rules.

    Ride 1:
I partook of the “drinking all day and into the night” ride Saturday, with the stop at FC Distillers.

I got a “Winter Martini” which used vodka rather than gin. It was quite refreshing and put a smile on my ride buddy’s face. The lemon infused gin that was passed around was really excellent. This was a really great place, which is why we hung out there for a long, long time. Would love to go back and hang out again.

All you have to do is say the word. :)

I mean, where else can you get deviled eggs and good, local bourbon?!

As part of the “you can not drink all day if you do not start in the morning” ride, we descended upon one of my favourite hang outs in Falls Church: The Falls Church Distillery. (Otherwise known as “The Distillery”.)

I had the Church Bourbon (neat), which is really quite smooth with just a hint of spicy sweetness. 10/10 will have again. Probably at some point this weekend.

A few of us went to Cotton & Reed, a rum distillery, after HandlebarDC’s alleys of DC ride for some spiriteuring. We had passed close to Union Market during the tour but didn’t have time to stop there. Boomer the creator of the Spiriteuring prize was kind enough to come with us and partake. I am a sucker for campari and got the Redbeard cocktail which had a bit of ginger. It was very refreshing!46afb6fad82adf1420c28a4251054143.jpg69b2aef3d3b5f76fe15ad2946de59e87.jpg26f4190241bf4d5dee03c9fe7d2055c6.jpg

More spiriteuring! Passed by District Distilling on the way home. They distill a number of spirits from rum and gin to bourbon. Had a cocktail with the Wild June, their western style gin. Quite flavorful without being too overwhelming. Also found that the bartender Javier looked remarkably similar to a friend in San Francisco! See what you think of the resemblance.,31e5a2e9163208bae70a72c8b31f868b.jpg451479254f5819c0e2214f6b30a35136.jpga73abc32517cc94bb6ada27985affa35.jpg4667a4b8ea7714b8cbc0bb90e9d01dab.jpg

2 points to @bikedavid for circling (or cycling?;-) back to District Distillery, which had been our original destination last Sunday after @handlebarsdc’s “Alleys of DC” ride, but it was closed. +2 points for discovering the younger twin of his San Francisco buddy, and +1 for having a great story to share with said buddy. 5 points total!

So the great thing about BAFS is doing stuff you never did before right? Like riding for miles in sleet and freezing rain and other fun activities, right?

Well today I drank at an artisanal distillery for the first time, despite being interested for some time.

Went to Sang Froid in Hyattsville with Komorebi’s ride. Drank their main offering, a “dutch style” gin/genevra. I learned much more about gin, its history and qualities than I had ever known. We tried it straight, with a little water, chilled, and mixed with ginger beer. It had an interesting peppery thing going on, the result of the rye the distiller mentioned. Very interesting place.

Spiritneuring #1: I also did the Dutch gin tasting at Sangfroid today. It had more flavor than English gin, and the owners were friendly and taught us a lot about the gin.
