Welcome Team 19.
My name is Cathy Miller. I live in the Fairfax area, a couple of miles west of George Mason University. I am a retired RN so I have been enjoying the extra free time to do things that interest me. I have had the pleasure to do some bike touring and loved it. I have done the Great Alleghany Passage (twice), Bike VA (twice), Bike the Erie Canal, and part of The Great Lakes Waterfront Trail (Canada). I had plans to do the Skinny Tire Festival (Moab, Utah) and Zydeco (Louisiana) during 2020 but they were cancelled like so many other events. I am looking forward to being able to do more exploring once it is safer to travel. However, I have been enjoying doing a lot of bike riding and exploring in our local DMV area. This is my 5th year doing Freezing Saddles and my first as a Team Captain. I am open to suggestions for a team name. I just put “Frosty Spinners” out there as an idea. If you have any suggestions for a team name include it in this thread.
Please introduce yourself on this thread and let us know where you live and whatever else you want to share about yourself. Also, please join our Team’s Strava Club. The link is here: https://www.strava.com/clubs/810294 You need to be a member of our Strava Team in order to get team credit for your rides.
Regarding Freezing Saddles, first and foremost, I want to suggest that you just get out and have some fun riding your bike in the winter. You maximize your personal and team points by riding at least 10 miles every day. However, sometimes life gets in the way of cycling and you don’t have time for 10 miles. If you do at least one mile you will earn 20 points so it is worth trying to get out. You certainly want to ride safely no matter the weather. I have been know to stay up after midnight to do a ride in my neighborhood before a snow storm. I have been known to go up and down my street 30 times to get 10 miles since I was “landlocked” into my tiny neighborhood because of the “snow mountains” left by the plows at the end of my street.
One of the things I really enjoy during Freezing Saddles is getting involved in the Reindeer Games to earn pointless prizes. The games help you explore your environment and see things in a different light. Some days chasing down a pointless prize just gives you an excuse to ride and a place to go. Check out the list of the Pointless Prize games on the Forum thread for Pointless Prizes. While I have never participated in Calvin Ball I love reading the descriptions of where they have been hiding the “calvinballs”.
The other thing I enjoy about Freezing Saddles is participating in some of the group rides. With Covid-19 the ride sizes will likely be limited in number but they are a great way to meet new people. I have made a lot of good friends during Freezing Saddles and continue to do activities with them throughout the rest of the year. We can try to set up some team rides but we may be spread out all over the DMV so you may want to look for rides close to home.
Let me know if you have any questions. There are supposed to be new to Freezing Saddles people on every team. Anyone that has played Freezing Saddles should also be a good resource for questions.
Cathy
